About me

Hi, I’m Alex and I recently graduated from Oxford University with a First in Physics. I immensely enjoyed my time at university, which included starting a Stargazing Society, college football and doing charity hikes. Hi, I’m Alex and I recently graduated from Oxford University with a First in Physics. I immensely enjoyed my time at university, which included starting a Stargazing Society, college football and doing charity hikes. I also spent my final year as student Chair of the Physics department and have helped organise and run interviews for my college. I have therefore experienced applying to university from all angles – it is my aim to support you in your applications and to give you the tools to achieve your goals! I have been tutoring students in Further Maths and Physics this year and specialise in preparation for the PAT.

Studying Physics was for me exciting and intriguing. My final year of Astrophysics and Particle Physics was both of these, but at times challenging too. Different people have different strengths - a great way for me to learn was with my coursemates in a room teaching each other and learning together. Hear I found that the perfect way of framing a question or communicating a solution is often all that is between a learner and their understanding.

As a tutor, I really enjoy helping my students to interpret problems and more importantly solutions in a new way. I find that this is often the best way of transforming your most challenging topics into the most interesting. This takes empathy and patience to find the intersection of what we both know already! As such, these are the two features I try to use most in teaching.

About my sessions

For the initial session I like to learn a little bit more about you, what you’ve studied and what your goals are. Then we can work together on how you’d like me to help you get there, and create a personal plan for our sessions and your work. I may set you some introductory questions that are quite broad; these are for you if you’re not sure about which topics aren’t your strongest.

For most sessions you will complete questions before we call, and the first portion of the session is going through the parts you want to discuss. If you would like I can mark your work separately and flag areas that require some attention. The second part of the session is usually breaking down a new topic in preparation for next weeks questions, perhaps doing an example question in the call together. The relative length of these depends only on how you learn best - we can run through as many questions as possible, I can deliver full lessons on topics and everything in-between! There’s a portion of all exams that come down to ‘exam technique’ that I will also try to intersperse throughout my teaching, perhaps by getting you to solve a question on a call and seeing how approach them (No pressure!)

I’ll be contactable between sessions through the My Tutor portal if there are any small, burning questions that can’t wait for the next session.
