About me

Hi there, I am currently in my third year studding History and the University of Leeds. I am passionate about History as it provides the fundamental context in which to understand our world today. Hi there, I am currently in my third year studding History and the University of Leeds. I am passionate about History as it provides the fundamental context in which to understand our world today. From the great individuals, down to the everyday people, there is always a fascinating story to explore.

What's great about tutoring is that it is outside the formal classroom environment, and so has the opportunity to be more casual, fun and engaging, which thus makes it a more effective method of learning. Having been through years of school I am passionate about making this subject more interesting and exciting, whilst maintaining the essential skills needed to excel academically.

My A Level subjects were a mixture of the arts and sciences, and so I am able to draw upon skills and knowledge from a range of subjects. Hence, I am well aware of the pressures of having to juggle different and varied subjects. As well as History, I can also teach English and Maths to a very high standard (History is not the only subject I am passionate about). I initially started my university life studying PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at Durham University, before realising the importance of doing something you really love, and changing to History. As a result of this, I am very experienced in UCAS applications and the writing of personal statements.

About my sessions

What is most important to me as a tutor is paying attention to what each specific student needs. We all think and learn in different ways, and so it is essential that I tailor my lessons in order to bring out the best in my students. I also prefer a more casual environment, believing that students learn best when they are at ease. Learning does not have to perceived as a chore, and if the students themselves can lead the experience, this is much more rewarding.

I teach my students all of the skills needed to ace coursework or exam essays. This stems from the ability to plan, structure, and execute an argument using points backed up by knowledge or sources, all in a clear and concise manner. Dependent on my student's needs, I can also teach how to use and examine sources; how to introduce historiography; and the historical narrative in the first place. Closer to exam season, I can also run revision sessions, creating revision material and teaching revision techniques like using mind-maps. I am more than happy to assist students though the marking and critiquing of any work, providing detailed feedback.

I vary my methods slightly when it comes to Maths, but the core principles remain the same. I prioritise giving my students all the necessary skills needed for them to deploy in a given situation. This includes a level of critical thinking that ensures they understand what they are doing, not just regurgitating formulae.
