I specialise in teaching English, Philosophy and History at a range of levels, and in helping students to improve their critical thinking and academic writing.

I take what might be described as a holistic view of learning and education. As a tutor, I strive not only to improve my students' knowledge, understanding, and abilities, but to encourage and cultivate genuine intellectual curiosity. This, more than anything else, is the foundation of academic success, but more importantly, of a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Alongside my tutoring work, I also have professional interests in heritage and the arts. I’ve worked as a researcher for the Institute of Art and Ideas, and in communications for some of the UK’s leading architectural heritage conservation charities, including the Landmark Trust and the Churches Conservation Trust - secular organisations dedicated to preserving our country's most historically significant buildings.

About my sessions

I'm not only deeply knowledgeable in the subjects I teach, but also genuinely passionate about them; I bring enthusiasm and expertise to all my lessons, ensuring that they are both highly engaging as well as results-driven. Indeed, I see myself as a mentor as much as a tutor, truly investing myself in my students' development and progress - both personally and academically.

My experience, both as a student and as a tutor, is that education is most effective when it speaks to our personal interests - when we are genuinely curious and motivated to learn, rather than when it is merely something we are obliged to do. That is why I work closely with my students to understand their individual ambitions and motivations (or indeed their lack of motivation in a subject), and then to find ways of making the subject relevant to their interests.

The key to good tuition - I've found - is attentiveness to the needs of one's student, and rigour and clarity in one's advice and explanations. However, a bit of lightheartedness and a sense of humour are just as essential - learning is not only more enjoyable, but also more effective, when it's fun! I seek to bring all of this to my tuition.
