About me

Hi, I'm Eben and I'm a second year Music student at Durham. I love the chance to be creative and like to apply this idea of creativity to my tutoring. I want to hear what YOU think-- after all, it's you who has to take the exam! Then, we can work on how to justify your ideas and how to link them to the more technical aspects of a text. In English there are (almost!) no wrong answers, as long as you can explain and justify what you think, I can help you develop your own style of analysis that works best for you. Having taken four essay-based subjects at IB, I'm happy to talk about essay-writing skills, structure, and grammar until the cows come home. I actually love writing essays-- they're my favourite part of my degree-- so don't be afraid to ask to get technical! Being a musician, I always like to see how music can inform my study of English, thinking especially of the way that words sound and flow. If you have any interests that you think make you a better English student, don't hesitate to let me know! Essentially, I really enjoy English and I want you to as well. I want these tutoring sessions to be an opportunity for you to try out new ideas and get more comfortable in preparing for your English exams.

About my sessions

I want my tutoring sessions to be delivered in a way that suits you best. Everyone works differently, so let me know what the best way to further your understanding is. Personally, I was always a talker-- the best way for me to learn was to talk through the text verbally, picking out quotes as I went. But some people prefer to annotate on paper, or to split a text down into smaller sections to look at one by one-- whatever works best for you.

Putting pen to paper in an exam can be daunting, but these sessions are for going over English techniques without having to worry about word counts or time limits. Don't be shy, throw out any ideas you have and then we can work out how to develop them. As we move through the sessions, it would be great to see you take more of a lead and begin to justify, develop, and link your ideas back to the question yourself-- this means you're starting to think in the same way you should be answering exam questions! Once you can read a text deeply and begin to form and justify an opinion about what it is really telling you, you're well on your way to being ready for those exams!

These sessions should hopefully be a conversation, with both of us working to understand the text better and to be ready to structure an exam answer well.
