About me

Hello! My name is Laura and I'm a recent graduate in history from Cambridge University. Hello! My name is Laura and I'm a recent graduate in history from Cambridge University. I love history and always have; I am passionate about understanding how and why people in the past made the decision they did, and how their ideas shaped the world we live in. I am also offering tutoring up to GCSE level in English. I think with humanities it is important to find areas you are interested in, and topics you want to write about, to look at how that can be transformed into an essay with good exam technique. I know from my own exams that whilst learning facts is important, it's more important to develop your own writing style and ability to argue your point. There are no rights and wrongs in humanities, so finding something you're interested in and then making your own arguments, supported by your factual knowledge, is key. In that way, my lessons will be structured around you: how do you learn? What do you find interesting, and how can I make the things you don't find interesting appeal in a way that sticks in your brain? In particular, I think practising essay technique is important. I will have you write parts of essays, or plans that include your arguments and the evidence you will use that I can then mark for our next session and we can discuss together. We can edit things as we go along, changing the style of our sessions dependent on your learning. Learning is about understanding, and that is unique to each person.

About my sessions

I am a big believer in preparation; your tutoring will be entirely personalised to the syllabus you are currently following. Not only will that be in term of the content, but I will familiarise myself with the specific exam board and their requirements. I think a deeper understanding is more important than just memorisation, and so that will be the focus of our sessions, but with the exam and course requirements in mind. For humanities I think the most important thing is learning how to translate your thoughts and understanding into an essay, and make a coherent and sustained argument. Humanities are entirely subjective, and when there is no right or wrong, the most important thing is to ensure that you are making your own argument, consistently backed up with factual evidence. I will therefore ask for plans or sections of essays, which I will mark and we can discuss in our sessions. Sessions themselves will be centred around discussion, with me guiding you to work out conclusions for yourself, and finding ways to make you think creatively and to argue your point. Progress is entirely dependent on the individual, and I want to be very clear right at the beginning what your style of learning is and what you hope to achieve within a set time frame, so that you can get the maximum benefit out of these sessions.
