About me

Hi guys! I'm Ollie, I'm 20 years old and I am a Modern Languages student at Cambridge University! I study French, Spanish and Catalan (rogue one I know) and I am truly passionate about these subjects. Having gone on to pursue them at university, they have allowed me to open more doors than any other subject I study. I have studied French since the age of 10, and Spanish since the age of 13. I clicked with both instantly, and knew from a very young age that languages were my future! My...

My particular passions are grammar - having studied Latin until A Level (which I am more than happy to help out with as well!), it is very interesting to see how languages that descend from the same origin are similar and how they differ. Furthermore, I am relatable - I realise that some people want to be able to speak a language as fluently as possible because it gives you confidence and above all, is impressive! I am currently out in Barcelona for four months, and it is a nice feeling when you are speaking Spanish to someone and they don't realise you are English! So, I am very keen to use my passion to be able to inspire other people down this path as well - it is one that has taught me a great deal already, and it opens so many doors. I want to be able to give people confidence in speaking a language - let's not forget that with what is going on in Europe at the moment, we linguists are invaluable!

About my sessions

I keep my sessions simple, varied but above all, competitive! At school I found that competition brought the best out of me, on the sports field and in the classroom. It is a great way to ensure that the student is constantly progressing and entertained! For languages, I will start with 15 minutes of vocabulary. This is important to keep ticking over - I have let this slip before, and it has an impact. I tend to use the quizlet tool, which has several challenge settings. For grammar, I get to...

For grammar, I get to know my student's strengths and weaknesses, and I will prepare exercises for weaker points. The next 25 minutes of the session will be spent here. It will get tougher, and I will throw in challenges to keep students on their toes! The last portion of the session will be spent on the exam. I know the importance of mark schemes - they have a strict criteria, and a strong student can get a B if they do not follow it, whilst a weaker student can get a top mark if they do. I will go over exam questions with the students, to finish in their own time, and will look at mark schemes in the next session. This is similar for maths - the first half of the session will cater towards a weak topic - I will prepare exercises, and keep it competitive and challenging. The topic will be briefly revisited next time, and if all is well, we will move on. The second half will be from a past paper. The student may be asked to finish this independently, and we will go over it in the next session.
