About me

Hi! My name's James and I'm currently in my 2nd year studying for a BA French and Russian at Cambridge University. In terms of my subject I love the melding of multiple literatures and language. People have always told themselves stories since the human race first began, my degree allows me to examine the how's and why's of storytelling across all ages and from two unique perspectives. I love meeting the people who speak my languages and getting insights into their perspective...

People have always told themselves stories since the human race first began, my degree allows me to examine the how's and why's of storytelling across all ages and from two unique perspectives. I love meeting the people who speak my languages and getting insights into their perspectives. At A level I studied French, Italian and English Literature alongside an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). I also did Maths at AS level. Applying for university was a long and stressful task so I hope that with all my A level students (including those looking into Russell Group and Oxbridge) I can ease the task: giving them information built up through my own experiences and those I've collected from others. At university I'm part of the debating society (The Cambridge Union), I'm part of the French Society and I'm taking part in one of the many blossoming access schemes. I'm also part of the Emmanuel Cake Club that friends of mine set up!

My approach to teaching fits around the individual needs of the student- be it for GCSE, A level, Oxbridge tutoring of Personal Statement Guidance. If a set of exams are coming up I tend to be more exam focused, I will ask students to perform tasks outside of the classes and email them to me in advance of the lessons. I've spent years learning how to navigate the often tortuously complex education system, how to jump the hoops and tick the boxes, as it were: I will transfer as much of this knowledge as I can to my students. In terms of language tutoring I can start from the basics upwards or go straight in with polishing your technique. Focusing on the four basic language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) I can also give weekly vocab tests to try to expand the your scope if requested. I will always ask the student what it is that they want to get out of the lessons, where they feel they are weakest, and start from there. In terms of literary study I like to discuss interactively with students, I will always try to increase confidence in their own thoughts a text and hopefully pass on a bit of my passion. Whether it's brainstorming themes and quotes, doing 10-minute essay planning practice or just discussing the text, I aim for my students to come away appreciating the text.
