About me

Hi! I'm Josh, a recent University of Bath physics graduate and I've been instructing and teaching for the last 7 years in many forms, including: one-to-one tutoring, establishing and leading an academic after-school club, assisting classes within schools, leading outdoor activity groups, and teaching classes within a military context.

As a result I've taught people who respond in many different ways and so have developed a good sense of how best YOU can learn!

I have a 100% pass rate for the classes whom I prepared for exams, but I also have tutored students to supplement their learning outside of an exam context.

In earning my degree in physics I subsequently have a strong knowledge and passion for maths too (enough that I'm going to be a teacher!). The highlight of my academic career so far was earning a research placement at the prestigious Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxford where I got to work with the most powerful (death star level) lasers in the world!

About my sessions

I adapt my teaching style to YOU by identifying: 1) Your particular learning style (e.g. talking, drawing, writing), and 2) What you specifically need to learn to reach your goal(s). The more open you are, the more precisely we'll work those out, and therefore more effectively achieve your aims! I can then also plan your next tutorial and better tailor it to your style.

But my general teaching ethos is to guide you through the topics you need to improve on so that you understand them fully. Once you truly understand something it takes a lot longer to forget it compared to blindly memorising facts and figures. So the majority of the tutorials will be about reaching that level of comprehension, and THEN identifying a clear list of what numbers, etc., need to memorising. That can be done in the remaining tutorial time or independently for the next session. The best way to improve is by doing, so then we'll go through example questions to hammer home your confidence with the topic, with gradually less assistance from me. By the end, you'll be able to teach other people yourself!

Going through example questions also shows clearly your progression with a topic and where any gaps in your understanding are. I can identify these and we'll focus on them. I believe you can do whatever you set your mind to, but in school teachers can't always focus 100% on you, so I take pride in doing that for you and for them!

We are very pleased to have Josh to help my son, as he is preparing for his scholarship exams for his senior schools. Josh is a very patient, natural teacher, he is leading the way in order to let my son find the answers himself instead of giving the answers directly, therefore my son not only solved the problems but also learnt the ways to think when he's dealing with questions in exams. Also, Josh summarises the learning notes after each lesson which has been a great way for my son to recap his lessons, plus Josh will give out some extras practices according to what they've been doing as well, anyway, Josh is simply a superb teacher.

My son found Josh's lessons to be highly engaging and super fun! We also appreciate his efforts to completely personalize the material. My son always leaves Josh's lessons feeling inspired, excited & motivated to discover more about Physics - he always throws himself into the creative homework that Josh sets and can't wait for the next lesson. Josh is clearly passionate about his subject and is instilling that in my son - What more can a parent want from a teacher?!
