About me

Hi! I'm Amy and I'm a recent graduate from the University of Glasgow. Maths is a subject I loved at school because it allowed me to think logically, problem solve and I loved trying different approaches to work towards an answer. My understanding and passion for the subject only grew during my time at university.

Maths is a subject I loved at school because it allowed me to think logically, problem solve and I loved trying different approaches to work towards an answer. My understanding and passion for the subject only grew during my time at university.

I have two years experience tutoring pupils in maths at both National 5 and Higher level. As well as this, I have hands on experience in a National 5 classroom where I assisted pupils with difficulties during their lessons. I believe these experiences have improved my understanding of the current curriculum and in particular highlighted common 'difficult' areas that pupils struggle with. I also think these experiences have helped me improve the way I tutor.

All too often, maths can be a daunting subject that many pupils struggle with, but I very much look forward to providing clarity in an area of difficulty or a new way of looking at something for pupils as well as my passing on my passion for the subject.

About my sessions

With a new pupil I like to discuss topics they have found difficult with the pupil and/or parents so that we can create a 'hit list' of topics we will cover together. Usually if the pupil comes to me with a concept they have failed to grasp I will re-explain this to them, using diagrams if possible as I feel they can be a very useful learning technique. I then like to test this understanding by looking at a couple of relevant questions. We can then revisit the concept if the pupil str...

We can then revisit the concept if the pupil struggles with the questions or move on to another area if the pupil is happy and understands the work we have done. (Sometimes to test this I will ask the pupils to explain a concept to me as if I was the pupil and they were the teacher).

To aid long term understanding I may suggest the pupil looks at certain questions either from their own resources or from resources online that they can attempt by themselves, perhaps before the next session to ensure that they have retained what they have learned. Also, I like to briefly revisit topics already covered in lessons further down the line to help pupils keep on top of course material. In general, I try to encourage pupils to think about how they study maths by themselves in preparation for exams. I talk to them about creating mind maps, lists and flashcards to facilitate their learning as I believe these are all good ways of preparing for exams, that I myself have used, as opposed to only using practise questions.
