About me

I study English and French at the University of Oxford. I chose these subjects mostly because I love reading, and especially reading in several languages; access to different languages means access to different literatures, different cultures, and different world views, and I am keen to facilitate this kind of access for others. I chose these subjects mostly because I love reading, and especially reading in several languages; access to different languages means access to different literatures, different cultures, and different world views, and I am keen to facilitate this kind of access for others. When, as an Austrian student, I took my A level exams in English literature, my French DALF exam, and my ELAT and MLAT admissions exams in order to apply for university, I had to rely mostly on my own work and a few tutoring sessions for preparation. This means I know how important tutoring to help students to realise their potential. At university, whether as the editor of The Poor Print, the Oriel College student newspaper, a volunteer tutor for English GCSE students, or a short-term intern at the Oxford Story Museum, I have always worked to allow others entry into the literary and linguistic world I enjoy so much; I hope I will be able to convey this enjoyment in my tutoring here as well.

About my sessions

I believe that success in language and literature exams depends mostly on three things: a broad understanding of context, good preparation/exam technique, and linguistic confidence. I will ask for a recent piece of work, ideally marked, to know at which level students currently stand, and develop an individual study plan adapted to their strengths and weaknesses and to the assessment criteria of their specific exams from there. Lessons will mostly focus on going through selected questions and developing any more general issues that arise; of course, I will also gladly adapt to students' requests for specific lesson content. All this will help my students broaden their knowledge and determine which studying techniques suit them best, and we can then move on to boost their writing and speaking confidence. What worked very well for me when I was at school was, quite simply, practice, practice, and more practice: as we go on, small regular errors will be erased, patterns will become familiar, and quality will improve.
