About me

Hi! My name is Ioana and I am a second year at Cambridge studying Social and Political Sciences. I am passionate about my subject because you can directly apply the theories you learn to the phenomena you experience and observe in your everyday life; whether that’s through your interpersonal interactions or simply reading the news. During my spare time, I love going to talks and panel discussions organised by university societies and I am also on the committee of my college’s Feminist society...

I am passionate about my subject because you can directly apply the theories you learn to the phenomena you experience and observe in your everyday life; whether that’s through your interpersonal interactions or simply reading the news. During my spare time, I love going to talks and panel discussions organised by university societies and I am also on the committee of my college’s Feminist society where I help organise and run educational events open to everyone.

I found that taking a methodical and organised approach to revision really helped through my GCSEs and A-levels. I used the subject specification and exam criteria of my subjects to thoroughly understand the knowledge and type of answers that were required of me, which is something I would help my students identify too.

My tutoring style is focused on the student’s needs and abilities, and I would help them set SMART goals to track their learning progress and provide a motivating sense of purpose. Above all, I believe lessons should be relevant, informative and engaging, so I would tailor my style and learning techniques to the interests and preferences of my students. Everybody learns differently, whether that be visual, auditory, reading, writing, and kinesthetic, so I make sure to cater my teaching methods to what is most effective for that particular student.

About my sessions

In preparation for the Online Lessons, I familiarise myself with the subject specification so as to grasp what content needs to be covered as well as the type of exam questions that come up. In preparation for the Online Lessons, I familiarise myself with the subject specification so as to grasp what content needs to be covered as well as the type of exam questions that come up. This thus lends itself to the structure of the lesson whereby I make sure the student understands the content that is expected of them before moving on to practicing exam questions. Each lesson starts by setting relevant learning objectives with the student, which enable us to judge whether these have been met by the end of the session.

To deliver the lesson, I use a variety of teaching styles and mediums such as art, music and video in order to make the content as memorable as possible. To keep track of the student’s progress, I help them set both short and long term goals which are then put in a chart we can tick off at the end of each session. This enables students to not only see the overall end goal of the level they want to reach by the end of the lessons, but also allows them to focus on the specific steps it takes to reach that end goal.

I think it is important to encourage learning since it is one of the most valuable, life-long skills that will not only help in your future career aspirations, but also your personal development. You never know when certain bits of knowledge may come in handy, and it can help you build deeper connections with people and places you encounter.
