About me

I am a postgraduate and an experienced tutor; I can help you with History and English Literature, up to and including degree level. We can work on close reading skills, contextual analysis, essay structuring, exam technique, or just basic grammar and proofreading. I graduated from the University of Exeter with first class honours in History with English, and I also have a masters’ degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, also graded first class.

I’m positive that I can help you or your child shore up any areas looking for improvement. Unlike many other tutors, I’m not an on-going student, so you can be confident that I have a sound knowledge of the processes and skills involved in your education, from beginning to end. This also means that I’m very flexible (my time is currently spent preparing PhD applications to be sent off in January - fingers crossed!), so we can use any schedule that works for you. About my sessions

Are you unsure how to go about answering an essay question? Do you find yourself running out of time in an exam, or going over the word limit? Do you struggle to find things to say when asked to examine an extract from a text? These are problems that I can help you solve.

Are you unsure how to go about answering an essay question? Do you find yourself running out of time in an exam, or going over the word limit? Do you struggle to find things to say when asked to examine an extract from a text? These are problems that I can help you solve.

Each of my pupils get sessions that are tailored to them, so how we spend our time depends on what’s best for you. In a free meeting, I I like to go through what you feel your strengths and weaknesses are, getting a sense of what areas should be worked on, and understanding the time frames involved (what exams do you have? When are your assignments due? What areas are you getting marked down on? Are there any areas that your school/university lessons are missing? What do you feel least confident about?).

My lessons do tend to revolve around close readings - either of course texts, model answers, or of my students' essays. I've found that students really benefit from going through their own work with a fine comb to look for strengths and weaknesses, and from going through model answers to see what markers reward. I also spend a lot of time helping my students to dissect extracts from their set texts, and analysing sources with them.
