About me

I am a 2nd year student and the University of Warwick studying Liberal Arts with Economics. Liberal arts is a fairly new University degree in the Uk with only a few universities offering it. I am a 2nd year student and the University of Warwick studying Liberal Arts with Economics. Liberal arts is a fairly new University degree in the Uk with only a few universities offering it. It is based on the theory of problem solving, combining various courses and ideas to promote thinking and a wider understanding. Although it mainly consists of humanitarian subjects such as Philosophy, English and History, it also contains elements of Science and Psychology. In addition, I chose to major in Economics as it combines this unique problem solving way of thinking as well as my love for maths. I have always been a natural mathematician, taking my GCSE Maths a year early and achieving an A*. However, my younger brother, who is currently studying for his common entrance exams, has not had such success in his understanding.

For the past year I have been tutoring him in various subjects to help prepare him for his exams, but maths in the subject he has struggled with the most. He began with KS3 level 1 papers, achieving an average of 40% per paper. Currently he is doing level 3 papers and getting an average of 60% and has even gone on to do a large proportion of GCSE topics successfully. I have really enjoyed teaching him and seeing him progress and would love to help more children who struggle the way he has.

About my sessions

With a new student, I will assess their current level by presenting them with various questions in topics that they should know at their current level and age. I will then ask what their goals are and what they personally would like to achieve. I then would gather these results and make a personalised program to help them achieve these goals.

I will then ask what their goals are and what they personally would like to achieve. I then would gather these results and make a personalised program to help them achieve these goals.

At the beginning of each session I will present them with a series of questions to warm up their brain as well as assessing their levels in the topics. Then, at the end of the topic I will present them with the same questions, to monitor their progress. I understand that many children respond to different methods of teachings. By monitoring their progress in such a method, I will be able to identify which methods work best for them, catering personally to their needs.

One of the most important things I've noticed from teaching my brother, is that a large factor of a child's success isn't with their knowledge, but with their confidence. A child will often see a question and instantly say they can't do it, without even attempting to think, this is often the case in algebra. Rather than lacking the knowledge to tackle the question, they instead are simply lacking the confidence. Therefore, in order to help the child progress, at regular intervals I will show them their progress at previous stages, to show them what they have achieved and what they are able to achieve in the future.
