About me

Hi! I'm Julia and I just finished my BA in Music at the University of Oxford with 1st Class Honours. I am half-Swedish, half-American, but I grew up in Portugal. At my international school in Lisbon, I did GCSE and the International Baccalaureate (IB), which has given me a broad view of different learning systems as well as a specialised and focused attitude from my 3 years at Oxford.

I love music because you can find out why and how a piece elicits a particular emotional response! I also appreciate how varied it is, including music history, analysis, and performance. History is my other favourite subject, having studied it at HL for my IB and in music history at university. It fascinates me because it gives us a deeper understanding of many aspects of society today. Biology is my favourite science and studying it at IB gave me a very rigorous, detailed education, with a special focus on cells and genetics. Having lived in Portugal, I have a very strong command of the Portuguese language, and a unique first-hand experience of its culture and traditions.

I love teaching because I can share what I’ve learnt and explore different approaches to the same task. I really hope that my tutoring will have long-lasting benefits, both for exams and for a general love of the subject!

About my sessions

My favourite thing about teaching is seeing the progress of the student and the sense of fulfilment they get when finally understanding a difficult concept or finishing a piece of work. My priority will be to quickly gain an understanding of how each individual student works and to then shape my teaching to best fit their needs. I will also be flexible in my approach, depending on the subject or topic.

When it comes to preparing for exams, I will encourage past papers or practice questions to ensure a thorough preparation. However, when tackling a piece of written work, such as coursework, my priority is structure and attention to detail. A more concise and polished writing style can have a big impact on how your prose is perceived and these skills keep being refined all the way from GCSEs to university level.

If we are working on a particular topic, I can set an assignment or little test at the end to ensure that all of the main concepts have been understood. This will make a huge difference when studying for your exams as repetition is a crucial part of learning.

The best way to encourage learning is to help the student find what they think is fun and interesting about the subject or topic because enjoying yourself will create the best and most efficient results.
