About me

Maths is something I have always enjoyed regardless of how challenging topics or problems are, however I know this isn't necessarily true for everyone. It is very hard to do well in maths if you aren't confident in your ability or don't find some enjoyment in practising it, but I believe students of all abilities can find this confidence and enjoyment as long as it is taught in the right way. Initially through helping out friends and now through tutoring I've found that I am able to share tricks and explain techniques in such a way that maths becomes much more accessible and creates an environment that allows a student to maximise their potential. GCSE and A level maths is still fresh in my mind from when I took them so I can understand the problems from a students perspective and know how to deal with the tricky bits or things that just won't quite stick in your mind. Outside of maths, as cheesy as it sounds, I would call myself a 'people person' and I've found this allows me to develop an understanding and relationship with students that really helps in improving their confidence towards the subject. This is a key part of success in maths that is neglected in school, as with the current education system, a student must not only be able to understand mathematical techniques but must be able to present them clearly and confidently in short exams that may have daunting questions sometimes designed to throw you off.

About my sessions

Developing a skill set that allows you to succeed in GCSE or A level maths can be broken down into some key steps, my lessons are structured and designed around these steps to maximise what a student can get from our time. Often a student will just be told a solution to a problem and expected to then solve every other problem of its kind. The main body of my lessons focuses on understanding how and why different techniques and skills at the core of each topic work. This is done through exampl...

This is done through examples and questions I've selected and designed specifically to build on their core maths skills and show them how to apply these to the problem. Then when this understanding is achieved we can move on a large range of exam style questions that they can become familiar with and know how to go about tackling. This means that later when a student is attempting questions on their own none of them are out of their grasp and they can develop their confidence using their skills however the question is asked. To ensure we are progressing and will have long term success rather than just short term understanding a portion of each lesson is devoted to questions from a previous topic, allowing us to check they are learning the skills and techniques to a problem and not just its solution. This also allows us to see how topics can be combined as they are in exams but shouldn't put us off as they can still be tackled with our core skills and techniques.
