I have experience working well with children and young people, with previous experience tutoring, teaching in South Africa, and leading my university triathlon team’s training sessions.

Outside of English and History, I have a keen interest in languages. I studied Old English as part of my English course and now work with Durham University translating scripts written in medieval Latin. I also achieved a distinction in a three-week Beginners Mandarin course held at East China Normal University in Shanghai. I enjoy sport, having represented my university at triathlon competitions, and also love playing the piano.

About my sessions

Each person is different, therefore I ensure that each session is personalised to the needs of the student. For GCSE and A-Level students I will use the exam board specifications to know exactly what needs to be learned at each level. I find that with English and History, quite often the problem is not the understanding the content, but the ability to present ideas coherently. I will work on essay presentation, focusing on style, tone and the ordering of ideas. For English I will prepare by reading the chosen texts and will break them down into chapters and themes. For History I will have a thorough knowledge of the topic and will provide exercises looking at source work and essay writing questions. I encourage conversation, as I believe the best way to enjoy and succeed in English and History, from GCSE to university, is to discuss themes in order to formulate ideas and arguments naturally. Lessons will include seminar-style discussions of content before then focusing on how to present these ideas in essays.

Yesterday

After a mini-breakdown before one of his first ever tests at secondary school, Esther was absolutely fantastic in helping my son to focus his thoughts on teaching him some of the revision he just hadn't been able to learn. On the morning of the test, he was convinced that he would totally fail, but with just half an hour of Esther's very nurturing help, he managed to achieve a reasonable score. Thank you Esther. That was not an easy thing to do. He was very grateful for your input.
