About me

I have recently finished a year of postgraduate study at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Whilst in that year my specific focus was on the Elizabethan Sonnet, my interest in English Literature is wide-ranging and enduring. Some of my favourite writers are William Faulkner, Daniel Defoe, Sir Philip Sidney and Gustave Flaubert.

Whilst in that year my specific focus was on the Elizabethan Sonnet, my interest in English Literature is wide-ranging and enduring. I love English Literature because of the insight it allows into different times and different peoples. Reading worthwhile literature refines your understanding of the world and your understanding of your fellow human beings. Of course, part of that appeal is that these are often just good stories - at the base of all of Shakespeare or Dickens or Tolstoy's artistry are a series of enthralling and engaging stories.

Although it depends on the student, the best way to improve at English Literature is in the practice of critical analysis and commentary. Before taking my exams I always had a good deal of practice with the exam questions and someone to debate my answers with. I enjoyed this process and I hope to help other people do the same: when you engage with and embrace a subject like English Literature you are far more likely to succeed in it.

About my sessions

I believe that the best way to teach someone -- particularly in a one-to-one tutoring scenario -- is to tailor my teaching style to the pupils specifications. I believe that the best way to teach someone -- particularly in a one-to-one tutoring scenario -- is to tailor my teaching style to the pupils specifications. English Literature is a subject that can often alienate students, especially when they are subjected to teaching methods not suited to their needs. I will endeavour to work collaboratively with the student to find the type of learning that suits them best. I also hope to make English Literature interesting to the pupil, an apsect of the subject that can become lost in larger classroom settings.

Progress in ability at the analysis and discussion of texts can be measured informally, through our sessions together, or formally through practice exam papers and questions. I truly believe that the best aid to education is an enthusiastic teacher and a more-or-less enthusiastic student.

Gabriel was super well-prepared for my lesson and explained quite complex ideas in a very simple but informative manner. I’m very happy and would definitely recommend him to anyone!
