About me

My recent graduation from the University of Edinburgh with a First Class degree in English Literature should (hopefully!) exemplify my keen love for the subject, as well as my hardworking, ambitious and highly motivated character. I strongly believe that there is no such thing as a 'stupid' response or question to a text; it's simply all about having the confidence and security to explore and formulate your own ideas, and hence why I think 1:1 tutoring can be so incredibly benefic...

My recent graduation from the University of Edinburgh with a First Class degree in English Literature should (hopefully!) exemplify my keen love for the subject, as well as my hardworking, ambitious and highly motivated character. I strongly believe that there is no such thing as a 'stupid' response or question to a text; it's simply all about having the confidence and security to explore and formulate your own ideas, and hence why I think 1:1 tutoring can be so incredibly beneficial. I have tutored a number of students, ranging considerably in age and ability; however a recurring theme in every one of my lessons is to maintain a constant dialogue between student and pupil. I have found that this type of ongoing exchange (rather than a lecture type format which many tutors slip into) is not only far more fun and stimulating for both the pupil and tutor, but encourages a deeper consideration of personal responses to texts and the opportunity to develop unique ideas.

About my sessions

I ensure that I begin every lesson with a thorough explanation of the day's lesson plan. I ensure that I begin every lesson with a thorough explanation of the day's lesson plan. I find this gives a clear structure to the class, while also giving the pupil an opportunity to raise any queries or areas they would like to spend particular time and attention on. Generally, I divide a two hour class into three sections: 50 minutes on the first task (sometimes working through the student's previous homework, or perhaps tackling a reading comprehension together), which is followed by a 5-10 minute break, in which the student can get a drink and have a moment to pause and reflect. When we return, with approximately 50 minutes to go, I make sure we do something entirely different and (if I can help it!) something particularly stimulating and enjoyable, such as creative writing, a game or quiz. Another important part of every one of my lessons is giving the pupil a proper chance at the end of each session to raise any worries/ ask any questions. The continuous exchange which I uphold throughout my classes aids this final part, as generally my pupils feel very relaxed and comfortable in asking any questions or raising any concerns. Throughout all sessions I am pernickety about grammar, spelling and punctuation. I will always collate a list of any mistakes made which I send to the pupil after class as part of their homework to read through ahead of the next class.
