About me

Hi, I'm John, I'm now in my 5th year of studying medicine, I’ve absolutely loved the last 4 years of university and now place in the top 10% of my year academically. Hi, I'm John, I'm now in my 5th year of studying medicine, I’ve absolutely loved the last 4 years of university and now place in the top 10% of my year academically. I get heavily involved with all things outdoorsy, from hiking to skiing and kayaking, and regularly teach for the Wilderness Medicine society here in Liverpool. Last year I was elected 4th year rep for the medical school and spent the year performing duties like, organising revision sessions and well-being activities on top of my usual workload. I’ve always had a fascination with the sciences, especially their applications to improve people's quality of life and to pursue this, I went straight to university after my A-Levels. I have at this point been through many exams and spent numerous hours revising, I know how frustrating, stressful and boring this all can be. I have always found that a true interest in the topic and understanding, rather than rote learning, are the most successful ways to revise and this is reflected in my teaching style. I customise my lessons, for individual students, to foster interest in topics even if they previously found them boring. I also seek to build understanding so that my students can be adaptive and link or apply their knowledge in different situations. There are no silly questions and if something doesn't make sense to a student, I'll explain it another way, whatever works for that individual. Everyone learns differently and I'm more than happy to facilitate that.

About my sessions

My lessons will be extremely flexible and tailored to my individual student's needs. I will begin with a session to just have a talk with the student, what is their current understanding of a topic and where are their strengths and weaknesses are. Following this my next session will cover a section of the appropriate exam board specification, focusing on any parts that the student finds difficult. I will start with a few past paper questions, to gauge their understanding of the topic, bef...

I will start with a few past paper questions, to gauge their understanding of the topic, before breaking these down and teaching about the concepts behind the questions. I like to use diagrams, videos and tables to help explain these to both auditory and visual learners, as it helps to reinforce the explanation. Following this I will provide and explain some model answers to questions set at the beginning, going over any differences between these and the student’s answers. To conclude I will give fresh questions that cover the same topic, to verify their knowledge. I will repeat this structure every week, going through topics, either at the student's request, or according to the exam board specification. Each new session will then begin with a quick revision quiz on what we covered in the previous lesson. After a number of sessions, agreed with the student in advance, I will run a quiz, on all the topics we have covered, in order to measure progress. Once this is complete, we will set the date for the next quiz so that the student is able to track their own progress.
