About me

Hello, I am a physics student at the University of St Andrews, with the intention of following the path to a joint Masters degree in theoretical physics and maths. I am currently a direct entry second year student. Hello, I am a physics student at the University of St Andrews, with the intention of following the path to a joint Masters degree in theoretical physics and maths. I am currently a direct entry second year student. I chose to study physics and love physics so much because knowing how the world works around me is very interesting, but I never seem to be satisfied when I've learned something, I still always want to know more. Another reason I chose physics was to combine both my love for science and skills with maths (instead of having to be more decisive about my degree choice!).

When at school, I was often the person that my classmates would contact for guidance on maths/chemistry/physics problems, so I decided that it would be a good idea to turn into a job. I know well about study skills and how to get the most out of the course to get the best grades. I used these to achieve high grades in my time at school, even getting 99% in my national 5 maths exam and then 97% in my Higher maths exam the next year (don't ask me where the 4% went, it's an old joke now).

I recognise that both physics and maths may at times be recognised as the hard/boring subjects, but I want to help change that! I have a great passion for my subjects and hope to project at least a little bit of this view onto students. After all, the best grades come out of a combination of hard work and enjoyment/eagerness to learn of the subject.

About my sessions

As classes have been running for a few months now, I will first ask you if there are any topics that you found difficult previously that you would like me to go over with you before we move on to newer material. This helps make things easier to learn as you progress.

I'm flexible with the way the student may want to learn. I will ask them how they feel they learn best and what topics they want to cover. In this case I would encourage the student not to come to me only with stuff that they find easy/fun, and instead make the most use of their time by addressing the stuff they struggle with the most first.

If the student is unsure about how they learn or what they want to focus on, I start with the topic that they are working on in class and find what it is they should work on with me. I will give problems to solve and work together with the student to solve it together, then give additional material that they may want to work on themselves in their own time for practice. After any class test or exam, I'll ask the student what they found they were weaker on and what they were stronger with and revisit the weaker topics, and the same idea with homework completed.

I measure progress largely by the improvement in a student's confidence in their work, and also their ability to think out of the box more and not being afraid to keep trying even if they might be wrong the first, second or third time etc. as long as we get there.
