About me

Hi there! I'm Lottie, I'm 22 and I graduated from Oxford University this year with a first class degree (ranked 2nd in my year) in English and Modern Languages, with distinction in speaking Italian. I am really passionate about languages and although my BA specialised in Italian (linguistics and modern literature), I have been studying and speaking Spanish, too, for over 10 years, keeping up my ability with advanced courses to supplement my degree.

I spent my year abroad in Milan, working first as an au pair (teaching English after school to children under 10) and then in Rome, as a teacher at a private language school in the city centre. I gained experience teaching students of all ages, from younger children to retirees and found it incredibly rewarding to help my students progress and achieve their goals.

I know firsthand the value of an engaging and committed teacher, and owe much of my success in achieving 45/45 points in IB and getting to Oxford to really tailored teaching methods and support and small, focused class sizes. Where this level of support is not available at school, I am particularly committed to helping students achieve not only their academic goals but also develop their extracurricular interests and reading. As such, I am more than happy to additionally assist students with Oxbridge interview and entrance exam preparation.

About my sessions

Having spent time teaching on my year abroad, engaging with students of all levels, backgrounds and ages, I recognise that every student is unique in their needs and goals. I have always tailored my lessons on an individual basis, incorporating 1) a short term view of the student's aims for the next lesson, whether that involves a vocabulary test or a specific grammar query and 2) a long term view of assessments, possible university applications or interv...

Having spent time teaching on my year abroad, engaging with students of all levels, backgrounds and ages, I recognise that every student is unique in their needs and goals. I have always tailored my lessons on an individual basis, incorporating 1) a short term view of the student's aims for the next lesson, whether that involves a vocabulary test or a specific grammar query and 2) a long term view of assessments, possible university applications or interviews, and - importantly - the student's interests and strengths.

When I teach languages, I am sensitive to the materials and resources students have been given at school, and seek to supplement traditional textbook exercises they may have to do for homework with 1) further (fun) exercises to objectively track progress in key areas, such as grammar and reading comprehension and 2) discussion of up-to-date sources in the target language including newspaper articles, music, and videos.

Teaching literature is always a pleasure and never a chore; as someone who reads omnivorously I find it incredibly rewarding to engage with students about both their set texts and wider reading. I encourage not only granular close analysis and formulation of personal response but also broader discussion of context that helps students to situate literary works with regards to historical, social and political phenomena.
