I have a broad academic background - I started in psychology and moved gradually through neuroscience and machine learning into robotics and AI. Because of this I have a bit of an outsider's perspective on technical topics since I know what it's like to learn maths while starting in the middle!

My teaching style focuses on gaining an intuitive understanding rather than learning by rote memorisation. I consider a lesson to be successful if the student thinks "I could have thought of that" at the end - there are many beautiful ideas in e.g. mathematics and computer science that are tough to learn but make perfect sense in retrospect!

I'm also a savvy coder and really enjoy teaching programming languages in general. Coding is fun and I think it's a skill everyone can learn, even if it seems hard or impossible at first.

About my sessions

I'm goal oriented so I like to start by identifying what the student wants to know or what they're having trouble with in particular. This can be as concrete as an exam-style question or two, or as abstract as a general topic that they want to understand better.

Then I want to identify where the gap in understanding lies, and see if I can help the student build up to an intuitive understanding of the topic. Sometimes this might involve taking a step back and addressing some prel...

Then I want to identify where the gap in understanding lies, and see if I can help the student build up to an intuitive understanding of the topic. Sometimes this might involve taking a step back and addressing some preliminary topics, or sometimes a shift in perspective is needed away from how a topic has been taught in the past. I make use of a lot of visual tools to explain concepts in a way that doesn't require jargon or complex terminology.

I have an informal approach to measuring progress (there are already too many exams to deal with) and I want to encourage a bi-directional, conversational style of progress review, where I ask probing questions to test natural understanding, and seek the student's own feedback on how happy they are with their own knowledge of the topic.

Andrey could not have been kinder or more patient. I find computer programming very intimidating, but Andrey met me at my level and never once made me feel like I was asking a stupid question. He explained everything well and made me feel more confident in my abilities. Really recommend him!

Andrey has been tutoring my son for his A level in Computer Science. He is fantastic. He is incredibly knowledgable. He delivers the sessions effectively and tailors them to fit what my son needs from him on the day. He's really responsive so it's easy to set up sessions. I can't recommend him highly enough.

A fantastic first tutorial with Andrey. He's a knowledgeable and enthusiastic individual, and presents complex topics (machine learning!) in genuinely accessible and memorable ways. Importantly he's very encouraging which makes a huge difference when dealing with trickier topics. Would definitely recommend!
