About me

Hi, I'm Hamish! I studied Classics at university, but I'm interested in a whole load of other things, too. I've studied literature, art, film, languages, history, and philosophy, and I love chatting about anything and everything. Talking things through is how I've always learned best - and it's what they do at both Oxford and Cambridge, my former unis, so I've had four years of practice. I've also tutored a fair amount!

Exams don't have to be stressful, you just have to try and find something that excites you about the subject and build on that. Even subjects I've really struggled with (and sometimes even found quite boring) can be mastered like that. I've been through almost a decade of exams now, and so I have gathered together a lot of tips and techniques (from various revision courses and summer schools, too) to get you through even the trickiest of problems. All the helpful hints I wish I would have known back then!

I've been involved in a lot of societies at university, like debating, rowing, tennis, cross country, journalism, and music. I also volunteered at Student Action for Refugees at Oxford. I like to cook Japanese food, and I've written a book which I'm hoping to publish one day. I'm currently studying for a law degree, with sponsorship from a City firm. My hobbies are possibly even more eclectic than my academic interests!

About my sessions

For younger students I follow closely by the school curriculum, but I also like to employ a conversational approach to learning which I think really fosters confidence in the subject area, because I think that confidence is the surest road to success. I also work in some extra-curricular material that can set students apart in their examinations. If anything gets flagged up as something that needs working on, I'll focus the next session on improving that area.

I am happy to set essay titles to work on and then give detailed feedback sessions on where we can improve - this is really helpful for history, classics, and language exams. I coach students on how to maximise their grades for GCSE and A-Level written exams with some easy-to-memorise tips and exercises. It's usually just a matter of demystifying the exams and the mark schemes, and boosting confidence!

For more experienced students (and those considering Oxbridge applications or similar), I like to work by the Oxford/Cambridge tutorial approach. This involves a question title that I will set in advance, followed by an in-depth discussion and debate. I'm happy to do practice interviews, too, if that is desired. Having been to both universities, I have a solid grasp of their respective systems, and can provide tailored coaching for either. I'm also happy to help hone applications and personal statements.
