About me

I am a third year student of English Literature at Durham University. I have always been intrigued by the power of communication and inspired by the ways in which the close analysis of texts can reshape our own opinions, something I hope to ignite within students of GCSE and A Level English alike. I have always been intrigued by the power of communication and inspired by the ways in which the close analysis of texts can reshape our own opinions, something I hope to ignite within students of GCSE and A Level English alike. Studying English has given me great communication skills, something that I developed when paired reading throughout sixth form with struggling year 9 pupils, an extremely rewarding activity that probed my interest in tutoring. The enjoyment I get from seeing students progress is clear within my tutorials, as other students have told me from their reviews. It is this enjoyment alongside the valuable communication skills that studying English has granted me, facilitating the teaching of History and Psychology also,  that I think creates a strong foundation for a great tutoring session

About my sessions

I found studying literature at school to be quite intimidating, throwing out subjective ideas in class that could be way off the mark can be daunting and it took me ages to realise that you really cannot be wrong in this subject so long as you can support your ideas thoroughly. It is therefore important to me that students leave sessions confident in their ideas that they can go away and further explore them themselves. The sessions therefore build towards a student lead structure, with the pu...

The sessions therefore build towards a student lead structure, with the pupil picking their weaknesses to explore. While initially, I guide the sessions to ease students into the process, eventually, I will become less of a 'teacher' and more of a challenger to their ideas in order to help them become independent in their thinking- something that is crucial to scoring the marks on the exam papers.

As a creative person, I love to use memorable mnemonics across all my tutorials and have lots of them and supporting resources ready to go. I am aware that for some students, taking notes while listening is not beneficial, so I also offer supportive written sessions to share handouts with students for them to refer back to in future. It’s really about teaching literature in a less methodical and often dull approach in a relaxed atmosphere so that you get the most out of your text and are confident with your conclusions by giving you the validation you may seek before experimenting with them in your essays.
