About me

Hi! I'm Sam and I study English Language and Literature at Oxford Uni. Why English? Because it's the best! Even after countless drafts of personal statements and interviews I can't answer that question easily in a line. And I think that is part of the answer - you can approach English in any way that suits you, whether you like where it fits in history, or in politics, or what it says about humanity, or society, or how it affects your emotions... or whether you just like a good st...

Hi! I'm Sam and I study English Language and Literature at Oxford Uni. Why English? Because it's the best! Even after countless drafts of personal statements and interviews I can't answer that question easily in a line. And I think that is part of the answer - you can approach English in any way that suits you, whether you like where it fits in history, or in politics, or what it says about humanity, or society, or how it affects your emotions... or whether you just like a good story! I would encourage anyone to find what it is that THEY are drawn to in studying English.

I spend a lot of my spare time writing either screenplays or music (I'm a good way through writing a musical). Creatively, I am fascinated with how things are structured to form meaning and emotion. These hobbies have been great for studying English at uni - one of my essays was all about linking music to Robert Browning's poetry. I am also part of the access team, encouraging people of all backgrounds to get into higher education.

I took the AQA English Literature B course, taking the Tragedy and Crime papers, but the basics are applicable to all exam boards and texts: solid close reading ability, and understanding what is required of you in the exam.

About my sessions

What do you need to do to improve? Even though I loved English, I struggled at school to get the grades I wanted. It took until Year 13 for me to realise where I was going wrong: I was after grades instead of improvement. You deserve praise when you get it right, but lets also look at your pitfalls and how to progress. What do you need to do to improve? Even though I loved English, I struggled at school to get the grades I wanted. It took until Year 13 for me to realise where I was going wrong: I was after grades instead of improvement. You deserve praise when you get it right, but lets also look at your pitfalls and how to progress. I want to apply my uni teacher's method for this: she doesn't grade us, but marks us against the syllabus with a tick list so it is perfectly illustrated where we have and haven't been successful. With this system, our class has become the fastest progress group she has had in ten years because we can see where we need to improve and systematically move forwards.

I like to combine this methodical approach to marking and progress with more open, student-led discussion during sessions. Asking "Why?", "How?", and "What do you think?" is always important. For A Level students, reading critical essays is also a great tool for exploring new ideas and opinions. Whatever we do, I always like to link or discussions back to the exam criteria and syllabus so the student knows how to apply their knowledge in a way that will best reward them. I am happy to set essays or homework texts - this isn't to unnecessarily add to your workload; this is to help you get where you want to go.

In the past three or four weeks which I couldn't remember, I had some really helpful lessons with Sam on english lit. I have to say that he really did make 99% of the contribution for the grade 8 I got in my trial exam recently.
