About me

I graduated from the University of Exeter this year with a First Class degree in English and I’m now studying for a Master’s degree at the University of Bristol. My passion for literature and writing has made studying English a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me, and I’d love to share my enthusiasm for the subject with students looking for extra guidance with their studies.

While Shakespeare is a particular favourite of mine, I have found that no matter what topic or era I am been studying, I am constantly in awe of how the analysis of a single word or phrase can reveal so much about a text. I believe that this is what makes the study of literature such an engaging and interesting experience, and it has been a passion of mine that I have

pursued all the way up to postgraduate level. I can think of no better way to use my knowledge and experiences than to help students going through the same assessments that I’ve faced. Having sat plenty of English exams myself over the past few years, I can offer advice about how I have approached everything from GCSE coursework to A-level papers, as well as the resources and techniques I’ve found to be most useful when revising. This one-to-one support can make a world of difference in the run up to assessments. These tutoring sessions will allow extra time for us to discuss exactly what can be done to improve, providing the direction needed to achieve the grades you’re capable of.

The main benefit of a tutor is having a personalised learning experience, so I will tailor each session to areas you would like the most help with. Lessons will therefore differ depending on the student. I’ll create exercises that will work to deepen your understanding of a text, whether that’s exploring themes or talking about context, and set tasks which will help you to apply this information to essay questions. With writing it’s all about practice: we’ll plan answers to sample questions together, looking at how to approach them and structure a response, so we can then review your answer for improvements. I am likely to set a short task to be completed before the following session to reinforce everything we’ve discussed, for example writing up an answer to a question that we planned together. This approach should clarify everything you’ve been learning in class and allow you to start to build up a new confidence with the subject.

I’d like to keep the sessions fairly informal and relaxed to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable telling me if something isn’t working for them. Flexibility is key to this style of learning, so if a particular task or general approach is no longer proving to be effective, then we’ll change things up and approach exercises from a new angle. This will help me to ensure I am doing everything I can to help, and it will mean the student will be getting the most out of their tutoring sessions.
