About me

I’m a university tutor and researcher in philosophy. I completed my PhD and BA at Oxford, interviewing admissions candidates from 2014 to 2018, and teaching undergraduate and master’s students. I've also worked in state schools, teaching humanities from Year 7 to Sixth Form. Outside of teaching and research, I am a keen writer and passable composer.

About my sessions

Sessions are structured closely around student goals, and modelled after Oxford's tutorial system. We can focus on your knowledge and understanding, your skills (e.g., at constructing arguments or writing essays), or a mix of the two. Generally, I will ask to see some of your existing work to build an understanding of where your understanding currently is. This lets us get straight to a conversation about the material you don't understand, or places where better technique in producing your work could lead to improved outcomes. Rather than simply lecturing you, our conversation will revolve around questions: you asking me, but also me asking you - you will be amazed at how much more quickly you will learn from being asked questions that help you construct the correct answer, than you do by simply hearing the correct answer being given. Most of all, I believe learning this way is more fun: because you, not just the tutor, get to play with and manipulate the ideas of two-and-a-half-thousand years of human history! I look forward to giving you the satisfaction of seeing how far your understanding and output can improve.
