About me

Hi there! I'm in my second year of a Mathematics degree at the University of Southampton, and I've always had a passion for helping bright young minds reach their full potential. Throughout my A Levels I tutored a number of people, ranging from kids trying to pass their 11+ test, all the way up to students preparing to take their GCSEs. I enjoyed this tutoring so much, and looked forward to it every week. All my students improved and said my work had helped them reach a level that...

Throughout my A Levels I tutored a number of people, ranging from kids trying to pass their 11+ test, all the way up to students preparing to take their GCSEs. I enjoyed this tutoring so much, and looked forward to it every week. All my students improved and said my work had helped them reach a level that they had previously thought was beyond their capabilities. That sense of fulfilment really spurred me on to pursue a more formal style of tutoring, rather than for just friends and family. Hopefully I can pass on the same style of teaching and to my students on this platform, as well as any tips and tricks I used for my own exams during GCSEs and A Levels.

About my sessions

I think the most important aspect of learning anything, isn't just understanding how something works, but WHY something works. I find that building an intuitive understanding of seemingly abstract concepts can really help students when it comes to exam questions that seem particularly daunting at first. This is a technique that really helped me through my exams and my learning of the subject as a whole, and it's hopefully something I can impart on my students. Another hugely important...

Another hugely important skill in learning is being able to take a question or concept that you're unfamiliar with, and being able to re-frame that idea to better accommodate your intuitive grasp of the concept. This is another technique that I found really helpful when revising, as a lot of students have difficulty determining "what is the question asking me to do?". I hope to be able to teach methods for overcoming this problem that many students face, by practising a wide variety of questions. I am able to cover any areas that my student feels uncomfortable with in as much depth as is required for them to feel satisfied with their understanding. I will prepare problem solving tasks for each lesson, which can be done with and without my assistance. I believe problem solving tasks, tackled with a tutor and then independently, work very well for subjects based on logic and reasoning.
