Hi!

I'm 23 years old, an experienced tutor, with a first class degree from Oxford University.

I am a social scientist and biologist, working in Public Health, work I love as it involves science communication and education. The three years I spent in Oxford were some of the happiest of my life and exposed me to new ideas and ways of thinking that have shaped me as a person, allowing me to continue studying science alongside humanities subjects in a fascinating way.

Both my parents are teachers and education has always been a passion of mine. At school I ran homework clubs for younger students whist at university I was heavily involved with the Schools Plus charity, working in local schools as a tutor or classroom assistant.

Whilst at school and to a lesser extent at university I suffered from a lot of exam anxiety. I therefore am very understanding of how stressful school work and exams can be, and want to help my students feel as prepared as possible and for them to view their exams as an exciting opportunity to showcase their skills, not a reason to worry.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Iona

About my sessions

My approach to tutoring is to try to support my students in tandem with their classroom work, so that they can maximise their learning opportunities outside of our sessions. I find it important that my students have a firm grip on the syllabus and exam structure from day one, so they feel in control and purposeful in their studies. I do not routinely set homework or exams, but this can be decided on a case-by-case basis. I keep notes on our sessions to monitor progress and am happy to discuss...

I keep notes on our sessions to monitor progress and am happy to discuss this with parents upon request.

A typical session might involve recapping material covered in our last session, to check comprehension and reinforce concepts, followed by new material which has either flagged by myself or the student, or been recently covered in school. The online classroom is invaluable as it enables me to draw diagrams for my students and keep the learning dynamic. I like to spend as much as half the lesson working through questions with my students, as this allows me to track their thinking process to identify areas for improvement, and helps boost their confidence.

Exam preparation is a collaborative process, involving:

Planning revision timeline together, Discussing revision tactics/ exam strategies, Reviewing tricky topics/ problems encountered during independent study, Reviewing past papers

After my daughters lesson she said that she got a better understanding of what she was unsure. My daughter is coming up to her exams and Iona is being a huge help to her.
