About me

Hi! I recently graduated from the University of Oxford where I studied English Language and Literature (BA Hons). I'm due to start an MA in July 2020 in Theatre Directing, and it's this love of theatre that led me to study English at degree level - it's still a major driver of my love for the subject. In my time at uni, I’ve worked with industry-leading writers, academics, playwrights, and directors, and would love to pass on what I’ve learnt!

I have experience tutoring and classroom-teaching students aged 11 to 18 in English and Drama, and pride myself in tailoring my approaches to suit individual needs. This includes investigating different styles of learning to ensure that students get the most out of sessions as possible, with clear aims and goals to track progress. This means improving not just the work produced, but the enjoyment of the process of that work.

My learning experience in secondary school was very varied, so I appreciate first-hand the importance of working with a tutor. Though the weaker of these learning experiences were nerve-wracking, they advanced my self-driven attitude to studies, which has seen me through a degree at the best university in the world. I know what it feels like to have to work hard against adversity to academically achieve, and know how to ensure this is something those around me grow to have too.

About my sessions

My lessons use three clear stages of target that are set both for individual sessions and across a longer period of time where relevant: (1) ‘will definitely be able to achieve’; (2) ‘will aim to achieve’; (3) ‘will aspire to achieve’. These goals are created in collaboration with the student in order to ensure reachable and aspirational targets that are measurable and definable. This provides a structure for lessons and allows us to see recurring themes in order to address them more broadly....

A major part of my tutoring style is creating an atmosphere where students feel able to think outside the box and make mistakes in the process. Learning is as much about trying out your own ideas and seeing how they fit as it is about working with a syllabus. I struggled with confidence in secondary school and so am keen to ensure that any similar issues faced by students are taken into account and eased. This, in my opinion, is one of the primary advantages of tutoring sessions: the ability to help not just work produced, but the process of the production of work.
