About me

My name is Haydn Wood and I am currently a first year undergraduate student studying English Literature at the University Of Leeds. I have great experience working with younger students, having mentored several GCSE pupils in my final year of A-levels. In addition to this, I regularly helped out with teaching GCSE English classes after-school so I am very knowledgeable on the GCSE curriculum as I am with A-level.

I can't say my love for English was immediate nor have I wanted to study it 'since I was little,' but during my time completing A-levels, I have been able to delve deeper into the study of English, growing a love for it. The opportunity to continue studying it at a University level was one I felt I had to take.

I want to show students that there's more to English than just reading and writing. Shakespeare didn't just write to confuse GCSE and A-level students, there's a much deeper meaning behind it as there is behind all other pieces of literary work. English goes beyond its simple, widely accepted meaning; English is History, Geography, Philosophy, Psychology, the list goes on. If I can instil this mentality into those I tutor then I believe results to be proud of will closely follow.

About my sessions

The way in which I believe students will best improve is through tailored lessons that cover exactly what they're struggling with or want to work on. This will work most effectively if the student tells me prior to the session what they want to work on, if there is anything specific, and I can plan it accordingly. Communication is key if these sessions will be successful so I will always be available to contact and will not only be of assistance when scheduled but I am more than happy to...

The way in which I believe students will best improve is through tailored lessons that cover exactly what they're struggling with or want to work on. This will work most effectively if the student tells me prior to the session what they want to work on, if there is anything specific, and I can plan it accordingly. Communication is key if these sessions will be successful so I will always be available to contact and will not only be of assistance when scheduled but I am more than happy to be contacted whenever a student requires help.

Personally, when I approach exams I use flashcards as they seem to work best for me. However, other revision techniques such as repetition, mind maps and videos are also useful resources. I aim to guide students around their revision, getting to know them in a way that means I can understand their strengths and weaknesses, tailoring sessions and their independent study outside of these sessions to help them develop. In addition, past exam questions are a great revision strategy that I will encourage students to incorporate into their revision. I will of course happily look over pieces of work which will help me to plan sessions based around any issues or gaps in knowledge apparent within pieces of written work.
