About me

Hi! I'm Tom, this year I've completed my PGCE teaching qualification in secondary science/A-level chemistry, and have been given an overall final grade of 'outstanding'. In this time I've taught science lessons in multiple schools from year 7 to A-level, as well as running sessions for students to practice past papers, and helping out with personal statements for UCAS. Before that, I completed my degree in chemistry in 2017, then spent a year working as a teaching assistant at schools in Manchester. More recently I've just moved to Berlin, where I've been teaching English to students online and trying to get back into making some music in my spare time.

I really enjoy teaching, It's a great feeling when you can help somebody look at a problem in a way they might not have thought about before, and then everything just seems to click!

About my sessions

Generally, lessons could be structured in a few ways. If a student has a particular topic they are struggling on, we could delve specifically into a lesson on that topic. This would then be followed up with a short practice again at the start of the next lesson to check the info has been retained. I li...

Generally, lessons could be structured in a few ways. If a student has a particular topic they are struggling on, we could delve specifically into a lesson on that topic. This would usually involve an explanation of the material including questioning, and then lots of practice with different examples based upon the topic until it becomes more like second nature. This would then be followed up with a short practice again at the start of the next lesson to check the info has been retained. I like to let the student lead as much as possible, with me there to give positive direction rather than to outright instruct or lecture, as this lets the student come to an answer by themselves, which I think is a really important aid towards understanding.

If there is no particular topic that needs covering, we can go over and practice any little things that may need brushing up, which can then be revisited later to check retention. We could also start to look at some future topics the student may not have yet seen in school, or practice some exam questions if the student is trying to prepare for any exams.

I think it is really important to maintain a positive learning environment, in which the student can move at a pace that is comfortable for their learning, and where they can feel free to ask any questions they may have. There can be learning opportunities in everything!
