About me

Hi, I'm Yvonne and I am a medical student in Manchester.

I love my subject because it allows me to work with people and solve problems at the same time. While it can be very stressful at times it is also extremely rewarding.

Outside of medicine I enjoy photography and playing the piano.

Back in school I had a lot of support from my teachers, which is one of the main reasons why I got to where I am now. I want to now give back to people who need some additional support, be it regarding the knowledge or learning techniques needed to succeed.

At the University of St Andrews I was involved in the PALS programme (Peer Assisted Learning Scheme), where I mentored a first year student for a year. My main responsibility was to talk to them about study techniques needed to succeed in Medicine. Within this scheme I also helped set up mock examinations so that students could practice their skills in a safe space and receive some feedback.

About my sessions

I want to help my students with both theoretical knowledge and study techniques. I recently had to modify the way I studied myself and found active revision rather than passively reading notes very useful. I encourage the use of past papers and question books as active recall is one key way to retaining information long term. This is a technique I have used and found very helpful myself. I think continuous motivation is really important for learning and measuring small progresses like understanding a previously tricky topic rather than seeing an immediate jump in marks on past papers.

In terms of knowledge I will use the relevant syllabus to gain an overview of what the student needs to know to succeed in this subject and exam. I will then ask them to identify the topics they struggle most with, and slowly start to build up their understanding from there. I am a visual learner personally and when teaching I like using diagrams and drawings to ease understanding. However I am flexible to adapt this to whatever the student needs.
