About me

I'm Charlie, a Durham History BA and Management (International Business) MSc graduate. Currently I'm studying for my Graduate Diploma in Law, which I combine with playing semi-professional hockey for a National League Hockey club and, of course, tutoring!

I am an exceptionally experienced tutor with a proven track record of providing help and guidance to a wide variety of students from the UK and further afield; I also have experience in helping students struggling with mental health. My own love for History and English was ignited by a series of inspirational teachers, whom I hope to emulate in making these subjects engaging and fun to study. One of my favourite aspects of studying History is the ability of funny anecdotes to simplify concepts whilst providing relevant and memorable information about almost any aspect of the subject. I feel that this approach is especially important when considering subjects like History, English, or Philosophy. During my GCSEs and A-Levels, I competed for the England U16 and U18 hockey teams, which meant that I was forced to work hard on my time management and hone my revision skills.

Having combined elite-level sport with academia and social life for almost a decade, I feel that I am exceptionally well-placed to assist students struggling with time management, mental health, effective revision, and learning strategies.

About my sessions

My tutorials are structured around the needs of the individual tutee. I take a real interest in the tutee as a person and not just a student; establishing a friendly and effective rapport with my tutees is something that I value incredibly highly. This approach also enables me to assist students struggling with the pressures of school life. I welcome regular input from parents in order to maximise the value and output of my sessions.

I focus directly on aspects of the subject that tutees struggle with, and tailor my approach in order to present this aspect in a new light. One of my continuing struggles is my tendency to disregard aspects of courses that I have found boring. A strategy to counter this in History, for example, could involve introducing some interesting and amusing background information in order to help contextualise and refocus the topic at hand. Whilst adding more information might seem counterintuitive, I have found that remembering interesting facts or stories enormously increases interest in otherwise 'boring' topics.

My tutorials will involve an informal chat with the student, followed by discussion about what they want to get out of the session, and what they have worked on since the previous session. This is followed by engaging with the topic at hand in appropriate detail. Finally, I will provide the student with an effective and tailored plan for time management and revision.

Despite my son being very sceptical about the whole thing. Charlie has managed to find a way to make a subject my son finds boring, more interesting and enjoyable. My son now looks forward to his lessons with Charlie and I am encouraged that he will get a much better exam score as a result of them.

Hey Charlie has been a great tutor and really helped to rekindle my sons interest in English. In a relatively short time he also managed to restore Ben's confidence in writing essays etc and has taught him to approach the subject with more clarity. Ben really enjoyed his sessions with Charlie and we regret that he has to move on so soon. Thank you Charlie
