I am interested in a wide-variety of sports and play 1st team rugby for Exeter University. My best teachers were always the ones who took the time to understand me on a personal level. As such I try to get to know my tutees as individuals, in order to understand what engages them. I try to be flexible with teaching styles so that it is suited to their needs. I believe in a 'show', then 'do' approach and as such I will normally go through a problem explaining each of the steps, and why they are made, to get to the solution. I will then give the student a similar problem and guide them through it, if needed. I try to balance keeping the confidence of a student high, with making sure they have the resilience to solve a problem they might not necessarily be able to at first glance.

About my sessions

I normally structure my lessons in two ways. If there is a problem with a specific question from material they have been given at school then I try to guide them through that question, before reinforcing the learning by guiding them through further examples to ensure they become confident at solving that type of problem. If there is an issue with a particular topic then I will work through an easier problem, explaining what steps I am making, and why they are being made, to get to the final s...

I normally structure my lessons in two ways. If there is a problem with a specific question from material they have been given at school then I try to guide them through that question, before reinforcing the learning by guiding them through further examples to ensure they become confident at solving that type of problem. If there is an issue with a particular topic then I will work through an easier problem, explaining what steps I am making, and why they are being made, to get to the final solution. I will then give similar problems to the student to do (guiding them through again if they struggle) until they feel confident solving questions of that type. Once they are then confident I will find more difficult questions to go through, until they are confident solving all problems of that type.

Alternatively if the session is more focused towards an exam I will work through past papers or similar material with the student so that they feel confident answering the questions on an exam paper.

He was very helpful and would always take the time to go over the complicated areas of my topic.

When I searched for a tutor for my son, I saw Tom's picture and I read up on him and what he said hit home with how I saw my son. I immediately booked a 15min talk with him and he was very easy to talk to. I subsequently booked lessons with him and he was very accommodating and was able to fit into our time. Consequent sessions with Tom were very easy to book. He has proved himself to be responsible, punctual and easy with his explanations for my son to understand. He was able to provide my son with specific ways to answer questions and his extensive knowledge in GCSE Maths was impressive! It is very sad that we had to pull out because there are no GCSEs sitting this year, but if my son decides to sit a Maths exam in the future, we will be looking Tom up. Thank you, Tom, for all your patience and support.
