About me

Hi, I’m Jake! I study History and Politics at the University of Warwick, and offer tutorials in both these subjects for A Level and GCSE students. I have recently taken part in a volunteering program to teach primary school pupils about politics – something which is seriously lacking at the moment! – and this inspired me to look for further tutoring work online.

I think my study of each of these subjects has expanded my knowledge of the other, because both history and politics overlap and interlink in lots of subtle (and often less subtle) ways. History is, essentially, the politics of the past; and, equally, politics is the history of the present. The reason why I am so fascinated by these subjects is that they are always reflecting on the present – they are always relevant. I think the reason why anyone should study history and politics – both separately or together – should be to work out how our society has become what it is today, and to examine potential routes for where we should go in the future. In the times we are living through now, I believe these subjects are more indispensable than ever. This is why I am enthusiastic about tutoring GCSE and A Level students to ace their essays and exams, as well as to stimulate their curiosity in all issues historical and political.

Other information about myself: outside of my academic studies I enjoy playing the piano (which I have also helped tutor in the past), reading fiction, and going on long country walks!

About my sessions

My priority is to determine how the student wishes the tutorials to be structured – some people, including myself, prefer creative or visual learning by using mindmaps, diagrams or timelines, while others prefer traditional learning of facts through quizzes etc. I am happy to use whichever method the student prefers, but I will always attempt to strengthen them by including activities or methods that they may find more challenging but also more rewarding. I also prefer a more informal, relaxed style of teaching – one which is based around discussion and questioning as much as it is around the learning of facts and exam/essay techniques! Finally, I am always happy use past paper questions, as well as to refer students to other resources if they would like consolidation, or are simply just curious!
