Having completed almost 200 hours of tutoring, I have developed a confident teaching style and an approach to tutoring that I have made my own. I have experience teaching students of a variety of abilities, from helping a student achieve full marks in an exam last year to recently boosting a student's grade from an E to a C and above. In addition to my tutoring, I have experience in the classroom setting through volunteering to teach politics and reading skills to primary school children.

Outside of academia, my hobbies include playing the piano (which I have also tutored in the past), reading fiction, and going on long country walks.

My Tutoring Priorities:

1) A Personal and Friendly Tutor-Student Relationship

If this does not work, nothing else will. My style is informal - sometimes conversational - as I believe this allows students to speak easily and thus understand complex ideas. For me, the student's opinions about the content are an essential component in their engagement. My aim is the create a relaxing educational environment where students are not intimidated by the process of learning but genuinely interested in it.

2) A Structured Approach to Learning

Breaking detailed information into manageable chunks and relating them together in a coherent manner is just as important as the manner in which we discuss them. Organisation and clarity are key to my teaching, both in terms of resources and explanation.

3) Creativity

Learning should be different every day. The great advantage of one-to-one tutoring is that the process can be tailored to the student's preferences and needs. Determining these is my first priority. I like to use a variety of resources in my lessons: diagrams, quizzes, dialogue, videos, online articles, past papers and more. All of these elements - with emphasis on approaches that the student feels most comfortable with - combine to create a varied and, hopefully, fun environment for learning. After all, enjoying the process is the most reliable way to succeed in it.

Jake is such a great tutor, he has really helped me over the past months and is very good at essay planning/explaining things well until you understand it. He also tests you and makes you explain key things ensuring that you fully know the content, thank you so much!
