About me

Hey!

My name is Martha and I study History and Russian at the University of Cambridge. I love learning about languages, culture and society and I hope to be able to share this passion with my students.

My goal as a tutor is to make my students more confident in learning languages, writing essays and analysing literature. Most people think that they can't do languages or do literature and my aim is to prove otherwise! I'd like to not only teach course content, but hopefully a perceptive, analytical and independent approach to learning in these fields that will help my students in anything they wish to pursue further.

And of course, I'd like to prepare my students to ace exams. Having sat a variety of different types of exam across all sorts of subjects, I can share some of my secrets about how to prepare effectively and nail exam strategy.

About my sessions

My first priority as a tutor would be to assess the student's skill-set, interests and abilities. I'd like to be able to make the lessons as effective and engaging as possible, and try to find material that would pique their interests. It would also be helpful to know whether the student needs exam-specific advice, or a more general approach.

I'd want to keep a dialogue open between myself and the student, so that they are always getting feedback but also so that they can let me know if they want me to change anything. I'm all about flexibility, and adapting to suit the individual needs of students.

For me, a key marker of progress in the humanities and languages is confidence and a belief in your own ideas. Rather than teaching the students to memorise content, I'd like to teach them how to think independently and critically, and how to express their ideas articulately.

My goal for languages students in particular is to get them talking and using the language a lot, so that they feel comfortable and confident with it. I'd like my students to come out of my lessons feeling like they've done more than memorise words and verbs, I'd like them to come out excited to practise their new skills!
