Degree: History (Bachelors) - Exeter University
Hi, I’m Saskia and I’m currently studying History at Exeter University. My love for humanities truly began at GCSE level and I hope that my sessions will encourage confidence and passion for these challenging but amazing subjects.
My aim is to make my sessions useful, effective and enjoyable and I ensure that every lesson is adapted to the individual’s needs.
History (GCSE: OCR, A Level: OCR)
At GCSE some of the topics I studied were the Cold War, the Vietnam War and Female Suffrage. At AS and A level topics included the Crusades, the Norman Conquest and Tudor Rebellions. During my first year at University I have gone on to study more topics and am able to research any specific areas the individual is studying.
To gain the best grades, mastering essay and exam technique is paramount and I can proofread any work. After gaining 100% in my final A level examination, I am confident in helping students improve and develop their essay structure. At A level in particular, l aim to help bridge the daunting gap from GCSE to A level that many students encounter.
English (GCSE: Edexcel, A Level: AQA)
Similarly to history, my main focus would be to help to improve student’s essay writing skills and exam technique. I am more than happy to read over work and give constructive criticism. I am a great lover of literature but over the years have become aware of the difficulty that comes with textual analysis, how to approach questions and how to put your words across in an effective manner.
At GCSE the books I studied included Of Mice and Men, The Crucible and Macbeth. At AS and A level, The Great Gatsby, A Streetcar Named Desire, Othello, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Hardy poetry, 1984, The Handmaid’s Tale, Dr Faustus, Frankenstein and Chaucer’s The Pardoner’s Tale were texts that I studied in depth- although I am not restricted to teaching these texts.
Classical Civilisation (A Level: AQA)
I studied Classical Civilisation to A level where I also gained 100% in the AS exam on Ancient Greek Architecture and Sculpture. Other topics I studied were Homer’s The Odyssey, Herodotus’ The Histories, Aeschylus’ The Persians and Virgil’s work The Aeneid. I am more than aware how challenging approaching these ancient texts and history is having struggled with it initially. I therefore feel I would be able to engage with students who also find ancient texts difficult to analyse and go through previous exam questions in order to encourage as much confidence in the subject as possible.
Feel free to email me or straightaway request a Meet-the-Tutor-Session so I can get to know more about you and what you need help with. I am very flexible with availability and look forward to meeting you!
