About me

I am a third year English Literature student at the University of York. I have always loved reading, but studying English at university level has also allowed me to explore my passion for History. I hold a part-time job at a museum, and so have experience imparting knowledge in a concise and and enthusiastic way. I studied Maths with Statistics to A-level, and achieved an A at Biology AS level. I found the mix of arts and science subjects enlightening, and thoroughly enjoyed all of my A-level...

I hold a part-time job at a museum, and so have experience imparting knowledge in a concise and and enthusiastic way. I studied Maths with Statistics to A-level, and achieved an A at Biology AS level. I found the mix of arts and science subjects enlightening, and thoroughly enjoyed all of my A-level subjects. Having taken the 11+, G.C.S.E.s and A-levels, I have a developed a range of exam and revision techniques across a wide range of subjects that have allowed me the success I have had and I hope to share these through tutoring. When I was in year twelve I took part in a volunteering scheme at my school that placed us within lessons as a teaching assistant for a year. I was allocated to a year 7 English lesson and helped pupils with things such as spelling, learning technical terms and how to use them accurately, and how to express themselves in the best way. I am a member of the Literature Society at university, as well as various dance societies. Separate from my degree, this year I have also been doing an extra-curricular beginners Italian course as it is a language I have always wanted to speak, and I enjoy the opportunity to learn as much as I can.

About my sessions

I believe an important part of learning is being able to use and practise your knowledge. An excellent way of doing this is through practice exam questions as they enable you to use the knowledge itself, and learn exam technique. It is important in a range of subjects to able to adapt basic knowledge to different situations, for example and unseen poem/extract in a literature exam or an unknown context or case study in a a science exam. By confronting these unfamiliar situations in a tutorial first, with help from someone else, it enables you to confront them more confidently in an exam situation. Most important is a fun and enthusiastic approach to learning to act as an encouraging influence.

Great final lesson with Charlotte. She has helped me gain more confidence in the more difficult gcse maths questions with her great explanations. Thanks for being a great tutor, wish I had found you earlier in the course! :)

Charlotte was very professional and organised for every lesson. Charlotte made sure she first found the gaps in my son’s knowledge of English Language and Literature and then she explained the material to my son and made sure he understood it. Charlotte also went through past papers with him too and explained to him what the questions are asking for exactly and how to answer it so he would get the maximum marks. We just got the results (August 2018) and my son ended up getting 8 in his English Language GCSE which is the equivalent to an A*! In English Literature he achieved 6, this is the equivalent to a high B. English language and English literature were my sons worst subjects (he just doesn’t like them) and he won’t be doing them at A level. This makes the results he achieved even more astonishing. So if you are looking for an excellent English tutor, choose Charlotte.
