About me

Hi! I study Classics and English at the University of Oxford, in my third year. My favourite topics are Latin language, Roman history and English Gothic literature, but I am pretty much able to help out with any course content if told what it is in advance. I love to share tips and tricks about revision, and really help students understand which ways of learning work for them. My favourite topics are Latin language, Roman history and English Gothic literature, but I am pretty much able to help out with any course content if told what it is in advance. I love to share tips and tricks about revision, and really help students understand which ways of learning work for them. I'm willing to go through essay structure, context to the course, and even written work to help my students reach their full potential. I'll help them really understand what examiners want! I have been tutoring on MyTutor for 2 years now, and I am also available to help university students with essay structuring and referencing, as well as tutoring on the ELAT and LAT for Oxford applications, and more general personal statement advice.

About my sessions

I will start each sessions by discussing what students thought of the specific topic they were asked to write about, and see which parts they found easy and difficult. We can then cross-reference this with their essays, and see how they could improve the bits they didn't do so well on. Using this corrective knowledge, we would start discussing a new topic, hopefully incorporating the weaknesses we have just identified in order to work on those for the next session. I would then go through...

I would then go through essay techniques with the student, if this is what they were struggling with. If their technique is fine, we would discuss essay questions from past exam papers and either plan the essays together, with me allowing the student to explore their own thoughts on a topic with my guidance, or we would dissect the question and look at a broader range of themes that may come up in exams. Through looking at their essays comparatively in each session, and keeping a log of strengths and weaknesses every week, I would be able to determine their progress and measure which teaching strategies had helped them the most, e.g. setting reading for the students, asking them to draw mind maps on a theme, doing independent research on a topic to report back to me in the next session. Finding a revision technique that works for them is the most important factor in A-Level and GCSE learning, and will benefit the students in their further studies.

Charlotte has been an amazing tutor for my English GCSE and has helped me achieve 3 grades higher than my initial target grade (from a 4 to a 7) after having her for only a year. She has boosted my confidence with essay writing and has helped improve my standard of writing. I would highly recommend Charlotte to anyone struggling with English as she has been a massive help. Thank you for everything Charlotte.
