Hi! my name is Harvey Phythian.

I am currently a second-year history undergraduate at King's College, Cambridge and have a great love for all history, as well as particular specialisms in Ancient History and Intellectual History. I am also incredibly interested in Philosophy and Classics, having continued to read widely in these areas and attend events and lectures on various topics within them. I intend to go on to study a for my Masters and PhD in Ancient History after i finish my undergraduate degree. I am, quite simply, obsessed with the study of ideas and the past, challenging conceptions and meaningfully understanding the world. You can see my A-Level results on my profile, but as always they do not tell the whole story. I tutored fellow students and lower years at A-Level for all the subjects I offer here, and won the Classical Association's Student Speaking Competition in Lytham in 2017. I hope to help you improve in not only your work as it comes or as is required, but also how you approach it and think about working, which is something we can discuss in more detail.

About my sessions

The most important thing for your learning and work to improve is to recognise and understand that it is YOUR work. I am not going to force you into a rigid work style and regime from the beginning, because that would not help you appreciate how you can do your best. We will discuss how you think you learn best and test to see whether that is accurate or not. With that done, we can enact a plan that we create together to reach a goal set by you. Generally, lessons will involve at least one test, either at the start in small factual or recall tests of perhaps 10-20 questions or at the end in longer recall and analysis questions and tasks. Each topic or subject covered will have larger tests at the end for us to measure where you need to improve the most after our sessions. Obviously, this sounds like a lot of examination and scrutiny, but it is important to remember that most of the sessions will be made up of discussion or directed teaching by me on how to approach problems or give detailed explanations of the necessary information involved. Fundamentally, I want this to be a fun experience, none of these subjects are boring, though they may at times be difficult, and there will be plenty of chance to engage in alternative ways of working or learning, such as references to media, videos and popular culture or material evidence and debate.
