Degree: Mathematics & Physics (Masters) - Warwick University
I believe that learning is most effective and satisfying when it based upon understanding the underlying roots of a problem, and so I plan and undertake my lessons in this vein. I’m a patient, friendly and easy-going person, and I’m happy to explain any concept or problem enough times until the student is comfortable with it and is satisfied that they are ready to move on.
The student is the most important part of tutoring and so I do my best to make them feel comfortable, encouraging them to interrupt if they feel that they want to go over anything again, if they want to work at a different pace or if they have any questions at all. I will back up theory with examples, both from past papers and of my own creation, as these act as a true gauge as to how well the student understands a topic and will build up their confidence as they begin to solve harder problems with greater ease.
Whilst I was at school I was often looked to by my classmates to help them understand concepts and techniques (especially near revision time) and so I know how important it is to be calm and patient, particularly when the other student is feeling stressed. This also taught me to use a variety of approaches when teaching so that even if the student does not grasp what I’m trying to explain the first time then I have other ways of explaining it so that the student really understands the concept.
