About me

I believe that learning is most effective and satisfying when it based upon understanding the underlying roots of a problem, and so I plan and undertake my lessons in this vein. I’m a patient, friendly and easy-going person, and I’m happy to explain any concept or problem enough times until the student is comfortable with it and is satisfied that they are ready to move on.

The student is the most important part of tutoring and so I do my best to make them feel comfortable, encouraging them to interrupt if they feel that they want to go over anything again, if they want to work at a different pace or if they have any questions at all. I will back up theory with examples, both from past papers and of my own creation, as these act as a true gauge as to how well the student understands a topic and will build up their confidence as they begin to solve harder problems with greater ease.

Whilst I was at school I was often looked to by my classmates to help them understand concepts and techniques (especially near revision time) and so I know how important it is to be calm and patient, particularly when the other student is feeling stressed. This also taught me to use a variety of approaches when teaching so that even if the student does not grasp what I’m trying to explain the first time then I have other ways of explaining it so that the student really understands the concept.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sorry its taken so long Jack. Brilliant tutor, highly recommended. Helped my son attain grades he would not have got prior to Jacks intervention. He just failed to get an A* by 1 point. Was originally projected to get a C.

Hi Jack, I've been meaning to let you know how Callum did in his GCSE's, but things have been hectic all summer. Firstly I would like to thank you for your excellent tutalage. Callum gained a lot of confidence thanks to you. He got an A (just missed out on an A* for his mathematics and a B for his further maths (which he hardly did any revision for - it was your help and some last minute revison with me and my wife that helped him get a reasonable grade). He was only 2 marks off an A, so we are having his papers remarked for further maths. He also got a B for his Physics and again was only 4 marks off an A. We had one paper remarked and he got 3 extra marks, but didn't put his second paper in for remarks, which as it turned out was a mistake as he was only 1 mark off an A with the upgraded marks. We are still looking for tutors fopr both emily and Callum. Chemistry and Mathematics for Callum and Mathematics for Emily. Emily was put in set one for maths thanks to you. :) Callum has thankfully put aside his gaming habits (at least for now) and is working hard on the four subjects he has chosen (Chemistry, Biology Maths and IT). He decided to drop Physics, but since discovering that they are doing atomic theory he wishes he had enrolled. :) One things for certain, his GCSE results gave him a wake up call. Out of the 10 he sat he got 5 A's 3 B's a C and a D (for Spanish) No A*'s but he didn't deserve them anyway as he didn't do much revision, thinking he didn't need to. Ah well. They live and learn. I hope your year goes well. We were disappointed that you decided not to do any tutoring this year as we were extremely pleased with your help. Good luck for your future, I'm sure you'll have a succesful career in whatever you do. Take care Jack Warm regards Stephen, Emily and Callum

Callum has become so much more confident with his maths since taking you on as his maths tutor. He not only enjoys your tutorials he says he has gained a lot from them since starting your tutalage. Thank you so much for your time, effort and flexibility over the last several months. Regards Stephen Brown (Callums dad)
