About me

Hi, my name is Olivia and I study Archaeology and Anthropology at Oxford University! I love my subject because of how broad it is- it combines biology, social science, geology, history, palaeontology, and even physics sometimes! As someone with specific learning difficulties, I am especially good at explaining things clearly and breaking down lessons and classes into clear, manageable and digestible chunks- I’ve had a lot of practice! I also have a lot of knowledge of different study skills and the pedagogy behind them- something I think is often neglected in schools.

About my sessions

On the first session I will discuss a few things with the pupil. What are they hoping to achieve, both from their tutoring and in their academic life in general? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Is there anything specific they would like to focus on? From this we can devise a plan together that the pupil is happy with, illustrating what their goals are and what steps we will be taking to achieve them. We will agree on certain points at which we would like to measure progress, such as...

We will agree on certain points at which we would like to measure progress, such as every month or term. This could take the form of a short test, a piece of work, or a discussion with the pupil. These markers will be used to inform our lesson plans moving forward. I will let the pupil know at the end of each session what we will be doing in the next session, and if there is anything I would like them to prepare. My lessons start with an overview of what we will be doing and what we hope to achieve in the session, so that we can come back to these aims at the end of the session and evaluate together whether or not they have been met. The main body of my sessions consist of a mixture of discussions, short (5 min or less) tasks, explanations and demonstrations. I think communication between pupil and tutor is key- this is not school. Motivation and respect must come from both sides, and the pupil and tutor must be in agreement about the amount of work and independent learning that the pupil is willing to commit to, as well as the style of learning.
