About me

Hi, I’m Sky and I tutor English Literature, English Language, and History, and am a graduate of English at Cambridge University. I tutor with a holistic approach that hones critical thinking, with a focus on Practical Criticism or close language analysis, allowing us to analyse anything in a precise way throughout our lives. I love analysing texts, writing and reading, and tutoring through discussion. Require academic knowledge on a specific author, or aid in bringing together an essay/coursework? Brilliant, we can work on that. Being taught from home? I have experience and great interest here. I have good experiences of academia, though not without some difficulties. If something that you need to or want to study isn't working in the way you want it to, that’s OK. My approach to tutoring is about stimulating further interest alongside skill, because engagement with the material is prerequisite to writing really well about that material. Together we will frame how you enter the text or argument and come out the other side with brilliant answers and ideas, formed well. While my degree is in Literature, I came joint-first nationally in GCSE English Language and am interested in creative writing. I can help you with humanities subjects, as well as Extended Projects, applications, proof-reading and editing. Together our tutoring will be tailored to suit you and tailored by you. Do write.

As one example, in tutoring English Literature the focus on the language on the page is vital, we always go back to this: the language and literary devices used via our own employing of correct technical vocabulary to create close, concise (and creative) readings of anything we want to, or have to (!) read, analyse, and then write about. Point, Quote, Analysis is important in this respect, as is the context of these words, especially the social/historical contexts and the relevance of that writing today. Language and literature is relevant to you, and encapsulates politics, power, and psychology. I’m interested in Shakespeare, graphic-novels, post-colonialism, and in particular literary theory and contemporary philosophy & poetry. I can tutor at GCSE and A level, and particularly enjoy university-level work and independent learning, home-schooling. Any level, any age.

I break the lesson down by checking in with you, before then teaching or discussing; we then apply this study to practical examples in the texts, the development of an essay, grade-boosting techniques or preparation, depending on your goals. I make the best use of your time with clearly set objectives and assessments, while making sure that discussion and accessibility are a core of our relaxed but dedicated sessions. I am very familiar with the exam boards and have two years of professional experience working in schools.
