I have recently graduated school and started attending medical school in Dublin. While preparing for exams to get into university I spent endless hours making notes and revising using a range of different techniques. The most important thing I learnt was that in order to study effectively and retain information you need to use engaging and enjoyable study techniques. I continue to use the methods that I learnt in university, and they allow me to stay interested and engaged in what I am learning so that I can get the most out of my revision without having to read for hours. This gives me time to participate in other activities that I enjoy such as sitting on the committee for the medical society or helping organise fundraiser events for local hospitals. My aim is to work with students using the study methods that I use so that we can figure out which methods are most enjoyable for them. By doing this, I hope that they are more inclined to revise and more engaged in their revision so that they actually understand the content needed for their exams rather than trying to memorise everything. I have plenty of notes and resources from when I was in school that I am able to share with them so they can spend more time learning the content rather than making notes for it. This will give my students the ability to study in an efficient and effective way, which leaves them time to take part in the hobbies they love and still ace those exams!

While studying for my exams I spent countless hours making notes and using them to revise in a number of different ways. I plan on using these same notes and revision strategies and tricks to help students fly through exams the same way I did. What I find is the most important thing is working with each student to ensure that they are finding the methods helpful and engaging so that they fully understand the content of the subject rather than trying to memorise the notes I give them. To do this my lesson would typically begin with the student raising the specific topic of the subject that they want to focus on that lesson. This can be done using past exam questions about that particular topic, or by simply going through the syllabus statements within that section of the course. I would then work through each question or statement by explaining the key concepts involved and important points of information that they would need to learn for exams. We would then have a discussion about these concepts with them to ensure that they actually understand them rather than just memorise them as this is far more effective when recalling information in exams. Before ending I would ask the student to concisely answer two or three similar exam questions just using the key points of information to gauge whether they have grasped the topic or whether they are still misunderstandings that need to be clarified.
