Hello everyone! I'm Grace, and I'm currently studying Ancient History at Durham University :)

Having never studied this subject before university, I appreciate the importance of developing transferable academic skills, in order to become resilient for anything a humanities subject may throw at you. At Sixth Form, I studied English Language, French, Spanish and History (which I again hadn't studied before) through to A2 Level, and completed an EPQ. From essay writing and revision, to analysing texts and interpreting scholarship, I struggled to learn how to do these things at Sixth Form, yet still gained top grades with a lot of perseverance. I know how contradicting and frustrating being examined on a humanities subject can be, for which reason, I am very keen to help!

I love history and languages - both ancient and modern - as I firmly believe that they help us to understand and interact better and interact better in the world today. This is something I particularly came to appreciate during my Year Abroad in Athens last year, and I aim to teach English abroad after I graduate. I hope to impart my passion for these subjects on to my tutees, by ensuring that I am tutoring them in a way to which they respond best. It doesn't matter how long it takes a student to understand a topic, as long as I can build their confidence along the way.

About my sessions

As a tutor and a student, I value flexibility in teaching methods. The student will always be in control of what I am tutoring them on, and have input into how I can improve the sessions for them. I keep track of what we worked on each session, testing areas of weakness regularly to ensure that we are working towards the student's goals.

As a tutor and a student, I value flexibility in teaching methods. The student will always be in control of what I am tutoring them on, and have input into how I can improve the sessions for them. I keep track of what we worked on each session, testing areas of weakness regularly to ensure that we are working towards the student's goals.

For English language, we will build confidence to ensure the student is exam-ready. I will ensure that the student can analyse, argue and show understanding of the content. I also offer specific sessions on creative writing. Last year I spent around 9 hours per week tutoring GCSE pupils via the school's programme, which means that I have a lot of experience catering for a wide range of abilities, different exam boards and personalities.

For French and Spanish, we will work through exercises in areas that the student wants to work on (reading, writing, speaking, listening and translating). Occasionally there may be a small amount of preparation to do before each session, however I would aim to make this related to their other homework and work in class.

Finally, when mentoring students for personal statements and EPQs, I am eager to help a student at whatever stage of the writing process they are at - from drafting what they should include, to refining a penultimate draft - using my own successes and failures as advice.
