About me

Hello there, I'm Grace and I study Ancient History at Durham University :)

Hello there, I'm Grace and I study Ancient History at Durham University :)

Having never studied this subject before university, I appreciate the importance of developing transferable academic skills, in order to become resilient for anything a humanities subject may throw at you. At Sixth Form, I studied English Language, French, Spanish and History through to A2 Level, and completed an EPQ. From essay writing, to revision and analysing texts, I struggled to learn how to do these things at Sixth Form, yet still gained top grades with a lot of perseverance. I know how contradicting and frustrating being examined on a humanities subject can be, for which reason, I am very keen to help! Through struggling with moderate to severe mental health issues, I am keen to help students navigate their own struggles and more specific educational needs, as I firmly believe that they should not be a barrier to academic attainment.

I love history and languages as I firmly believe that they help us to understand and interact better in the world today. English Language is crucial to communication and critical understanding on a global scale in today's current social climate, something I particularly came to appreciate during my Year Abroad in Athens last year. As a result, I hope to impart my passion for this subject on to my tutees, by ensuring that I am tutoring them in a way to which they respond best.

About my sessions

As a tutor and a student, I value flexibility in teaching methods. The student will always be in control of what I am tutoring them on, and have input into how I can improve the sessions for them. I keep track of what we worked on each session, testing areas of weakness regularly to ensure that we are working towards the student's goals.

I keep track of what we worked on each session, testing areas of weakness regularly to ensure that we are working towards the student's goals.

I specialise in tutoring English Language GCSE, with over 175 hours worth of experience tutoring predominantly school's pupils. Last year I spent around 9 hours per week tutoring GCSE pupils via the school's programme, which means that I have a lot of experience catering for a wide range of abilities, different exam boards and personalities. Through being involved in university welfare, I have received training in active listening and how to respond to emotional distress. I am passionate about using these skills in tutoring to accommodate students that may struggle with mental health issues or more complex educational needs. I approach my lessons with patience, diligence and creativity to ensure that I can make English Language engaging for every student, no matter their limitations.
