About me

Hello! My name is Rob, and I'm a PhD student at the University of Oxford. I know how demanding and sometimes stressful the school system can be. My knowledge of the system, and how to succeed in it, means that I know how to help the students get the grades that they want and need. I have had extensive experience working within the education system, from classroom assistant to teacher and tutor. These years of experience have allowed me to develop my tutoring skills, the most important of which are the understanding of what is needed for the exam and what the student needs. I have helped many different students, some who needed a helping hand, some who needed more. Therefore, I feel confident that I can provide a personalised tutoring experience that works for the student. In my degree, I am specialising in Early Modern Military history; but I have also studied topics such as American Civil War, Germany in the 20th Century and Britain and Russia in the Early Modern period. As well, I can tutor in other areas that the pupil is studying. Also, I can provide tutoring in essay writing and exam preparation, which, as a Humanities student, I have spent the last 10 years perfecting. Due to the small number of contact hours, I am very available. I can tutor all day on the weekends, and most evenings as well as some afternoons during the week. I am sure we can sort out a time that works for both easily. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

About my sessions

The first session will be dedicated to creating an understanding of the requirements of the student, and through that developing a structured program that will lead them towards their chosen goal. Sessions following this will include reviews of set homework, structured activities designed to hone critical skills, and discussion of further areas of improvement and critical analysis of the students work. The goal of the sessions will be the show a clear development of progress in the area selected by the student for focus, allowing them to understand and highlight many of the areas where improvement is needed themselves which will further enhance their self-study abilities. Progress for history is relatively easy to measure, the recall of facts coupled with the development of essential essay writing skills can be tracked and relayed to the student to ensure they have a clear understanding of their position. The most important part of the learning process is progress, once students can see they are improving the path becomes much clearer for continuing on this trend. Along with the connectivity of history, understanding how the isolated events of the curriculum fit into a more comprehensive scope will also assist in allowing the student to recognise the importance of the events they are studying.
