About me

My name is David - a second year MPhys student at the University of Exeter. I got into Physics as a child, when I stumbled across Michio Kaku's "Physics of the Impossible" TV show, which looks at the tangibility of some of the things we see in Science Fiction. As I got older, I realised I liked to question "Why?". Physics is the study of everything, so why is the perfect question to ask!

I'm from a working class background with not the best of schools available to me (to put it diplomatically...) but I was naturally gifted and would regularly be at the top of my class. Whilst this sounds amazing, this lead me to coasting right through to A-levels, never really having that *push* to do more. As such, I got BBC the first time I sat my A-levels and did not get into Exeter - this was the wake up call I needed. I pulled my act together and got ABB when I re-sat (though I'm adamant it was close to AAB! Definitely not bitter). So, hopefully I can give you that wake up call sooner that I received it, so that you don't have to go through the extra year like I did!

Outside of Physics, I'm a qualified UKCC level 2 coach in Judo and I have trained for 15 years. I've got a lot of experience with teaching all sorts of people with all sorts of abilities, so I'm certain I'll be able to help you!

After my degree I wish to go into researching and lecturing after obtaining a PhD, so know that this process is helping me just as much as it is you.

About my sessions

I'm adaptable in how I'm able to teach. However, I'm definitely going to want the onus to be on the student. By that I mean, I'm not one of your teachers, so I'm not going to shout at you if you don't do something. To seek tutoring there is usually a common denominator: you want to do better than you currently are, and you need some help with that. Perfect! Perfect! So you'll bring me topics/problems that you specifically are struggling with and we'll run through them in as little or as long a time it takes.

That being said, I realise a lot of people's routines have been disrupted during this uncertain time of isolation in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. I hope to provide some structure and normality to the lives of school children, and want to show that learning is more than just passing exams.

I don't plan to set "homeworks" per se, unless they are specifically desired by the parent/pupil. However, I will ask you to finish off any practice problems we don't get to in the tutorial, but I'm always a message away if help is needed.

I plan to be very conversational in style and to create a relaxed environment as that is how I've always taught - regardless of topic. You're seeking my tuition because you actively want in, and that is something I can get behind.

David has been absolutely brilliant in the short space of time he has been tutoring my son. My son was struggling in his GCSE Physics and Chemistry but David has taken time to understand what he was finding difficult and has helped enormously in overcoming these hurdles and improving his confidence within each subject.
