About me

I'm a fourth year student studying a masters in chemistry at the University of York. In my spare time I also play rugby and host a radio show.

My love and interest for the various disciplines of science came out in my early teens when I was fortunate enough to have an amazing tutor who was able to pass his enthusiasm and passion for the sciences to me. Since then, I've had lots of experience in tutoring students of all different skills and abilities. Getting the most out of your exams is being able to be pushed and to develop an intuition for the discipline which can only happen by developing an appreciation for the fundamentals, not just having the ability to regurgitate information.

About my sessions

My sessions are planned around a topic that the student has in mind. From there, the fundamentals and core principles are revisited in a lecture style. Engagement is key and I often do this by asking questions relating to the concepts at hand during the tutorial. Often at the end everything is brought back and some example exam questions are asked.

To achieve an A or A*, regurgitating answers or mark schemes is not enough. A-levels are a step-above GCSEs and the ability to problem solve and think about the science intuitively is what is required. I often encourage this by pushing beyond the specification. Often, exam boards neglect the core science that relates to the topics and not only will this be covered but consider general problems relating to them.

I always encourage further reading and recommend it heavily. I often spend twenty minutes after the hour of the lesson discussing questions that the students have, no matter how beyond the course it is.

George has been an amazing support for my son through his Mocks and his GCSEs. George has given my son the confidence to ask those questions that niggle / hold back learning as well as explain the more difficult areas across several subjects.

Questions George has answered

Describe the structure and bonding in Benzene (C6H6).

Benzene is a planar 6 membered cyclic ring, with each atom in the ring being a carbon atom (Homo-aromatic). Each carbon atom is sp^2 hybridised being bonded to two other carbon atoms and one hydrogen atom. There is a bond angle of 120 degrees around each carbon atom and a carbon-carbon bond length of 140 pm (1.40 Angstroms). Carbon-hydrogen bond length is 109 pm (1.09 Angstroms) Benzene is a delocalised pi-system formed via the overlap of carbon's py orbitals forming a ring of electron density above and below the plane of the benzene ring. Six electrons are donated to the delocalised pi-system, one from each py orbital.Benzene is a planar 6 membered cyclic ring, with each atom in the ring being a carbon atom (Homo-aromatic).
