About me

Hi! My name is Joe. I am 19 years old and live in South West Wales. I am a first year physics student at Jesus College Oxford. Throughout my time at school I always loved the sciences. I studied maths, further maths, physics and chemistry at A level. I completed my maths A level a year early and independently taught myself both maths and further maths outside of school. Doing this has given me a deeper insight into these subjects and a good understanding of the exam specifications.

I chose to study physics at university as this was the subject I was most interested in. Physics gives us the power to understand and study the world and universe we live in. Despite its notorious difficulty, I find physics to be both fascinating and rewarding. I hope to encourage my students to feel passionate about these subjects as ultimately having real interest in your field of study will result in success down the line.

Over the course of my study I have experimented with different learning and revision techniques and feel that I have a good understanding of these techniques, how and when to apply them and how to develop them to best suit your learning style. Everyone learns in different ways so it is important to find what works for you and be able to evaluate and improve your approach. For this, regular progress checks and feedback are essential. As a tutor I will help find this unique learning style to help you become an independent learner.

About my sessions

I believe that interactive teaching is most effective. Interaction not only avoids distraction but increases brain engagement and will help you learn quicker and retain the information. MyTutor has a whiteboard feature where both I and the student can write and draw. This will allow us to work through problems together and allow me to see how the student works and identify any areas of weakness. It will also give the student the opportunity to try new ideas and develop their understanding of...

It will also give the student the opportunity to try new ideas and develop their understanding of a problem by talking through it.

Generally my teaching style follows a simple approach. Before the tutorial, you give me an subject area you would like to focus on (e.g. differentiation). I will talk through some theory and ideas behind the subject and run through an example question. I will then proceed by giving you questions I have previously prepared of varying degrees of difficulty and have you answer them. If at any point you get stuck or make a mistake, we will discuss and correct it and move on. After this I can give you more questions to complete on your own in your own time and potentially go over them in the next tutorial.

Subjects such as maths and physics are very practical subjects. The best way to learn is to try questions. The more questions you try the more fluent you will become in that topic. I know many sources where you will be able to find and try questions. I will be able to help with any problems you get with these.

Joe sessions have been a great help to my daughter while studying for her AS levels. Very good to have someone who is familiar with WJEC as not many are.
